Caravans

So a good amount has been talked about caravans and their importance, especially with caravans being the one form of "global trade" that there will be. Which both adds more intimate interactivity between both ends of the trade, as well as adds in raiding and defending caravans as a pvp option. I'd like to know your guys opinion, or concerns about it.
I personally do like the idea of caravans, especially for the reason of pvp, I'm not always the biggest pvp fanatic but I do like the idea of being able to go out and hunt down caravans for their goods, or work with a party to defend friendly ones.

Comments

  • Im excited for this. Traversing the lonely roads with your companions and the combatants that are there to protect you and your goods. I think it will add a nice layer or immersion to the rpg as at the end of the day most of us are here for adventure.
  • I plan on hunting many caravans. I usually run a 10 multibox accounts, so it'll be fun.
  • I love the sound of the caravan system :3 it links back to the four pillar system and emphasises the risk/reward playstyle that Intrepid are really aiming for :) I'm hyped for it xD
  •      Today in the Twitch stream Steven talked about caravans a little more. He mentioned that in certain cases, you may have to have a caravan coming from a specific type of city or zone in order to maintain a building in your town.

What I took away from this is that caravans will be a constant thing in Ashes. It wont be some big event that you only do once a week to get all the resources you need. The repeat of caravans doing the same runs to net you those goals will form regular trade routes that I'm hoping will be high traffic zones for travel, pvp, and general player interaction. It will really make the world more immersive.
  • I wonder if you could make a profession of doing caravan defense?  Given a choice I would defend every time.
  • Yeah exactly and with the importance of the caravans it means you'll have to use them or move the goods yourself in order for your node to thrive. Which makes for a level of risk that you nearly have to take, but the reward could be just as high.

Like if there is some amount of profit or gain for doing so? Well what about hiring players to defend caravans? And heck you could try to game the system, and have a group of your own people raid the caravans to convince a node leader to hire you to defend them. Get the payment to defend them and then let the caravans get killed by another dispatch of players.
  • Ummm no.
  • I imagine traders could make decent profit.
Part of the challenge will be gather multiple people interested in sending their goods to the same destination - thereby increasing the amount that can be spent on defense by pooling funds.

Will be a good discussion for guild politics forming alliances over trade ^^
  • The other thing I wonder is if the merchant outfit you got from the Warrior of old pledge will make you look like other merchants. Because then you could attempt to blend in with caravans.
  • Or if it is a player stylized outfit, with a clear difference from NPC merchants
  • @T-Elf just follow @Welphgryn around and protect the ones he is attacking
  • What I took from the video is the word critical. That means if you want to sack a city you cut off it's caravans and starve them out like in a real siege. That's pretty awesome.
