Do you agree with Intrepid's plan to include holiday events in Ashes?

Based on the Q&A streams, Intrepid will probably add them anyway but it couldn't hurt to gauge where people stand on the topic.

Edit: Sorry, I shouldn't have put IRL in the title. I meant holiday events that would occur in-game but that are based on real life holidays like Christmas and Halloween. I don't mean in person events outside the game.

I'm basically in favor of holiday events as long as they do a good job of adjusting them to fit the Ashes world.

Rewards for participation would have to be vanity items (costumes, skins, consumable items like fireworks, etc.).
  • Already answered in a Q&A video. There will be seasonal events in game ie. Christmas and so on. They will tweak the lore to get to fit.

@UnknownSystemError; Good point. I'll reword my post to avoid misunderstanding.

I'd assume these aspects of the game are still at the tentative stage of discussion and brainstorming. I'm sure nothing is set in stone atm.

It couldn't hurt to gauge how people feel about IRL holiday events, skins, costumes, etc.

Given the number of gods in the game, it's going to be a big tweak to get them all to agree on one set of holidays ;)

From what they have said is RL holidays will be in game along with Lore holidays. Make more sense to have more options to actually make smaller events and content for the community.
I also think that if you're not actively participating in the events then you shouldn't receive rewards for it.

What if the rewards that can be acquired from participation such as skins and costumes are also available in the cash shop for a limited period of time?

If you don't manage to get the Reaper skin you wanted, it wouldn't be a bad option for players to have a temporary window of opportunity to buy it (either with real money or some sort of in-game credit).

I can see where you're coming from though!
  • Christmas is always fun, Doesn't matter what universe you are in.
  • Halloween events are my favorite in most games.
  • A lot of the devs are from the Everquest games where they have in game holidays that match our hilodays, but are not the same like Frostfell instead of Christmas so I expect themed holidays that are not exactly the same as ours.

This is what I am hoping.  Holiday events can be fun as long as they aren't mandatory and fit with the story of the game.
  • One of my most beloved games was Runescape, it really managed to get you into the spirit of the season. I hope Ashes of Creation's holiday events manage to capture that same feeling rather than focusing on giving out rewards.
  • Holiday events are the best :D Its fun in every game
  • I love RL holidays in games...in addition to holidays from the game lore.
I just hope the devs don't only focus on US holidays, like July 4.
  • Its a holiday why wouldn't we have it in the game. I mean you can't role play 24/7 and holidays bring people together which is the point of an MMO
  • Yes I like holiday events.  Christmas and haloween perhaps and spring/ harvest event .  If the devs wanted to, just in time for the 1st of each celebration per server, there could be a lore revealing event that explains why we are celebrating said erm celebration.

Additionally, given the amount of regions who're interested in this game (North America, portions of South America I believe I've seen, Africa, Europe, Asia ...) there are also so very many holidays to address.

We do know that, historically, most cultures do have seasonal holidays -- longest/shortest day of the year, so on and so forth -- so those types of things I certainly see as being very viable. However, you then must factor in that, if I recall correctly, a single season of game-time is estimated to take a week to pass; therefore, one month irl = one year in-game. So you couldn't specifically have a "Winterfest" on the shortest day of the year every month, that'd just get old.

I'm interested to see how this can pan out.

-Edit- I voted "Other," but for some reason, it didn't post.
  • I don't understand this. If the different religions and gods not related to the real life practiced religions IRL will be so important and realistic in game, why there would be a IRL related event like Christmas?

I think we should celebrate the change of the seasons, arrival day, Gods birthdays etc but not ones linked to the RL.

Honestly, I don't really care. Fluff can be fun.
  • yes gets more people playing over the hoildays
  • I always liked the holiday events in games. You don't have to call it Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, 4th of July etc. It could be Winter Solstice or something. Doesn't matter. They tend to be fun events with a change of pace. I like the surprise event bosses, mobs, rewards

I do enjoy those Holiday events.  They break up some of the monotony that can happen in games.  But I do think they should be available in the cash shop as well.  Since sometimes those holiday events require you to log in each day of the event to participate (therefore becoming a job) and extremely disappointing if you can't make all the days and therefore miss out on the rewards.  Plus that is more money for the Game to use to make the game better.

I do want events like that if anything just for the fun of it. It's like having a party on a whim it's just for fun no real need to earn the drops from it. However I do feel like the drops should be obtainable through the shop and cycled around each year. Nothing is more annoying than someone having to work or an emergency shows it's face etc.

Then they can't participate and totally lose out on the event. So I'd cycle the rewards each year and add a few new things in for the next year. While also probably selling them in the cash shop for the lazy or "heavy" pocketed among us. Really I'm just not a fan of the exclusivity junk being dropped in game all the time.

Rare items not everyone can obtain or a few really rare unique cosmetics for a limited time sure. Holiday event stuff no you ever seen the Santa hats in Runescape...

Edit: HA! 28% on exclusivity guess I'm in the minority here. =P
  • I like it when they create their own holidays that are themed after real world ones so it's fun but still part of the world/not immersion breaking.
  • I personally would like to see the items only be cosmetic, have a mix of old and new items every year but in the cash shop only have the previous year(s)  items and maybe something that can only be gotten from participating in that years events, like a 2017 shirt. (Doesn't need to back a shirt, really just something to say I was here)
  • As long as they don't include stuff like this... I'm fine.

Yes, I am all in for Holiday events and activities.  Like any other activity in game, you can choose to do them or not.

    Why doesn't OTHER show up?
  • I'm not sure re: the Other option lol. Maybe a new forum bug for polls?

I'm not a big RP person but I do appreciate a moderate degree of immersion in the game.

I'm basically in favor of IRL holidays as long as they do a good job of adjusting them to fit the Ashes world. As others have mentioned, rather than call it Christmas, it could be called Winter Solstice and so forth. For Halloween, I'd hope the creatures look scary and badass as opposed to some colorful plushie characters.

As for rewards, they'd have to be vanity items (costumes, skins, consumable items like fireworks etc.). I can see why some people want holiday vanity items to only be available to those who participate in the events.

For me, it depends on whether or not RNG is a factor. If things like skins are randomly given out from special holiday mobs or NPC quests, I'd prefer for them to be in the cash shop as well. I admit it's for selfish reasons. I opened 100+ Summer Olympic loot boxes in Overwatch and I couldn't get the vanity item I wanted (it wasn't even a skin - it was just a profile icon lol).  Then again, Blizzard and I have a rough history when it comes to RNG. I guess I'm still bitter about it  :p  Thankfully, Intrepid seems to want to limit RNG to things like loot tables for rarer items (all the standard good stuff which make sense and not the nonsense like enchanting having a random chance to destroy your item).

If there's a way to choose your own vanity rewards through participation such as a token system, a selection menu from a NPC, etc.  then I wouldn't care whether or not the same items are available through the cash shop as well.
  • Hmm only if we can siege the northpole node and prevent Santa from giving gifts ...
  • I am not a fan of Valentine's Day, Christmas, and St. Patrick's Day being in fantasy worlds. Completely immersion breaking. Also, unless they have these days once a month in RL (representation of "yearly" in Ashes) the time line makes no sense. I know, that's not how fantasy MMO's and so on work, but if you are going to celebrate an annual holiday should not your character do it every year?

I would be okay with an Ashes version of each. Again, annually. But that could get into a holiday every other day of our week. I would be more impressed with yearly events lining up with constellations that happen to "sink up" every 12 years (or 12 complete seasonal cycles in Ashes and 1 year to us). Even if they were associated and timed to represent our RL holidays.

That said, if they do holidays, I TOTALLY ENCOURAGE a holiday from every major religion, no government holidays, and no capitalism holidays (*wink wink nudge nudge*).
