MMO Development Discussion

Hey everyone,
For anyone who did not see my intro post I am here mainly to follow the development of an mmo from a technical point of view. I am a games programmer by profession but have never worked on anything quite the scale of an mmo and I am wondering if anyone else is here for a similar reason or is at least interested in games (specifically mmo) development.
My biggest interest with mmo programming is data management on a large scale (having a huge databases holding Item/Object info and pictures that can be access quickly at run-time), my experience with database programming is SQL and SQLite but queries in SQL are too slow to be a real run-time solution. Hoping to find some information about this!
Really want to see if anyone else is into this kinda stuff as well!
