Weapon System

I remember hearing that anyone can use any weapon but each weapon offers a different use for that class, What can we expect for Ranger type classes? will we be stuck using the same standard looking bow the entire time or will there be other ranged weapons for us to choose from?

Comments

  • Unfortunately we have no idea at this point.
  • What other ranged medieval weapons were you thinking about?
  • I would guess that people may want access to a variety of bows (short, long, composite?) and crossbows (light, standard/medium, heavy?).

My rogue would love access to a hand crossbow or dare I suggest a repeater crossbow (like the one Guts uses in the manga/anime Berserk!)?

I believe that Steven has already stated that there will be no guns in this game.
  • Regarding the broader category of weapons, I also believe that Steven addressed that dual wielding will be possible. At first I was very excited, believing this would be something my Rogue would look forward to and be distinctive, particularly to that class.  However, I was disappointed that they made it sound unimportant - as though dual wielding will not have much of an impact or the effect would be trivial.  If I will not have any meaningful outcome or benefit from dual wielding, why should I bother doing it?
  • Why just bows / crossbows? No love for slings or returning thrown weapons?
  • Would love to see crossbows and throwing weapons in the game.
  • its too early for anything definitive,  we can only dream at this point and post those imaginings, until we get answers.

Silly me!  Great point @Immermnemion!  I cannot believe I limited my thoughts and left out sling-types and boomerang/chakram (sp?) types!  Why not atlatls, javelins, throwing spears and even blowdart 'guns' (since they are not really guns after all...).
  • I can see using a light crossbow with a shield if you want extra defense. Maybe have one type  of weapon do high auto attack damage and lower ability damage while the other type does lower auto attack damage but higher ability damage. That could change the way you build your character. Either chose stats and gear that increase auto attack damage or gear and stats that increase ability damage based on the type of weapon you chose.
  • I know i already stated we have no idea right now but if we are just going on hope...i would love dual wielding one handed crossbows to be a somewhat "gunslinger" with crossbows.

I have always loved this idea. Personally my favorite would be some sort of throwing axe or throwing spear.
  • Atlatls!!!

YES!!!! Would love seeing dual wielding crossbows as a weapon selection for ranger or dear I say it even guns can possibly hit.

They've said no gunpowder (unless you have a more specific source), so traditional guns are out.  But that doesn't rule out some kind of arcane equivalent, e.g. Wildstar's Spellslinger has pistols that use magic to power their bullets.
  • Indeed, Steven has already said no guns which is why i was throwing out the dual one handed crossbows idea.
  • Can you imagine the difficulties with dual-wielding hand crossbows though lol. I'd much prefer things like chakram, throwing stars, Standard Twohanded crossbows, a pistol crossbow/shield combo for those tankier ranger builds. Maybe even a unique seige based bow and a wrist mounted arcane enhanced ranged weapon wouldn't be out of the way for innovative rangers or mages.
  • I would love to see some of the less traditional weapons make an appearance, things like flails, crossbows, spear & shield, long spears or polearms, throwing axes. What about a more tactical use for weapons, say spear or shield wall,  if you get several people fighting shoulder to shoulder with shields or spears/ polearms. Could open up all manner of new tactics for group pvp and pve for that matter.
  • Ranger, hopefully onehanded crosbow and a dagger <3 wooo i would go that route immediately
