he much play it for a reason and if it his main will not get nerfed to much
I wouldn't bet on mages being overpowered. First of all, i am certain Steven will be ten times busier once Ashes releases. I doubt he will have any playing to do once the game is out, you know, CEO stuff. Even if he finds time to still enjoy Ashes, i doubt mages will be overpowered or any other class for that matter. They, interpid, will most likely seek to have the balanciest, if that's a word, version of the game.
I'm sure mages will be awesome, I like mages, but then again I think all the classes will be great if they put in a lot of thought and effort into making them. My hope is just that they make all classes viable, so none of them are "useless" at something and ignored because other classes are better at everything. Balance is key. Back to the topic though, I will definitely be playing mage as main or secondary

I totally agree with you balance is key. But still mages are awesome so fighter/mage will be even more amazing.
With world pvp they will still be awesome. They will have amazing burst damage. As long as they are able to move and cast they will be crazy strong. Yes rogue skills will hurt, but if they get the drop on the rogue they are squishy.
While I do have a few favorite classes, (necromancers and paladins) I enjoy playing a wide variety. I am sure I'll roll a mage at some point. Just not my first choice.
If IS does their job, the classes won't be balanced. They will be fun and each shine in their own way. Balanced classes is normally a homogenized class set up and when played. No one is happy.
I am sure Mages will be awesome...but what i wonder more is what will the different Mages be like in particular Mage/Rogue. The double classes really has me excited for the possibilities.
The thing that worries me about playing a mage is that cast time (for some skills) which allows enemies players to interrupt the spell. We know the fighter-class will have gap-closers from the Spellsword Rush example so it wont be that hard for them to stay close to the mage. In general light armor robes dont offer good physical resistance so I dont think mages will be that strong in PVP.
@lexmax I can almost guarantee it will benefit them to not use Plate... if that wasn't the case there would be no point to have any other type of armor. I'm sure it will have skill enhancement or casting speed benefits

Not sure. A spellsword (Mage/Fighter) will undoubtedly be in close quarters combat, and would have a good cause to wear plate. But we haven't heard anything about gear stats and enchantments yet, so I'm just speculating.
I would assume a fighter/mage would be close quarters. Not a mage/fighter. I don't think they secondary class is going to have an impact such as that. I think it's going to me more of augmenting current skills than anything. A mage who doesn't try and up their attack speed and damage never lasts in PvP. This is what makes a mage the legendary "glass cannon"

@Neviathan we only saw.. what... level 3? We don't know anything about casting times yet. Mages are going to be a huge part of PvP
The concept of casting times isnt appealing to me, from a distance it doesnt matter that much but up close it gets risky because skilled players will interrupt if there's an opportunity.
@Neviathan I wouldn't worry about it. EVERY MMO I have played you cast extremely slow at first but the higher you get, the faster your casting gets. Sometimes to the point it looks ridiculous lol

Mages!!!!!
My point was that kiting will be more critical if opponents have the ability to interrupt, slowing down with heavy armor might make it even worse.
