Unique Quest Skills

Before I move to main topic I'd like to introduce myself. I'm an IT student and beginner game developer.
I was always a huge fan of MMORPGs so I thought of a ways to make this genre feel refreshed and really exciting again. Looking at AoC I think like my ideas could work in here. I really admire the work of game devs in here and I hope to be at their level someday.

About and idea:
I always loved to make my character feel 'special' but I think we all do like to be 'special' in some kind of a way and this system would let us really be special, it would also bring refreshment to PvE and PvP. Also the standard skill tree system is getting a little boring.

How would it work:
A system would generate unique quests based on class. So in addition to standard skill tree we could obtain our own special skills though it would take a lot of labour and we would have to face many challenges to get even one of these.

Example:
"Mage X is clearing dungeon with his party. During one of the fights the party if pushed by mobs to some old chamber. While resting in a chamber Mage X stumbles upon an old book if he reads it he will obtain a knoweledge about series of elemental books. After finding them all Mage X will find himself in old archmage tower where he will be able to place the books in any order resulting in a unique skill. Obtained skill will depend on an order."

Skill will be only ours and noone else will be able to redo the quest. Of course the skill pattern can be reused but in some random time intervals and places so noone can farm such a quest.

If you like the idea I have many more ideas how to make MMORPG feel refreshing, new and really exciting.

  • The idea sounds refreshing that you need to look for your Skills/abilities and in that way evolve your character by doing that, but then the system will be unbalanced for PVP parts of the game and so on. The idea could be good now that you also need to collect items to evolve your character  :smiley:, so maybe abilities for transforming in non-combat state? (could lead to the monster coin thing from the stream)

  • I´d also say that it would be realy hard to balance such a feat, AoC already have what is it.. 64? Diffrent combinations of classes in it. That in itself will be a huge feat to balance. But I like the idea! But maybe quests like that could un-chain other parts of the character and its inviduality. 
  • I don't think there would be need for a balance since quest like that would probably take you so much effort to solve so the skill would be really rare. Life isn't balanced right? If you put a lot of effort into something you will most likely get rewarded for that.
  • It starts off as a good concept, I really like that player would have to do X objectives (such as get cornered by mobs) and gather X materials (magic book tomes) to take to X location.
    Could even be; Once 5 tomes are collected, take them to the archangel tower at a specific time of day, so the light in the archmage tower window (which is obviously a special glass magic circle pantagram of some sort) shines down onto the player and tomes, combining the tomes and players magic to learn the new chosen skill, which is determined by the combination order of the tomes in which the player has chosen to place them.

    What I don't like however, is that "no one else is able to do the quest" because then the devs would have to make 20,000 different skills, one for each player who wants to do a quest like this, in order to keep it fair and not have people miss out on their own special skills. It is a PvP game, you can't really have certain players with OP skills that are unobtainable to others.

    Making people work for their level ups and spiritual character progression sounds good, rather than Ding, you have reached level X, you've unlocked Fireball level 5, you've unlocked iceshard level 5, etc..
  • I don't understand why  can't we have "certain players with OP skills that are unobtainable to others" ? They have spent countless hours to get where are they now. Look at the world, world isn't fair. Even if it's PvP game I don't like that reapetability because If I just spend enough time I can copy someone who did really big effort  to be really strong. At the end you will have just a lot of people with the same build, the same class, as for me it spoils the fun.

    Most of the MMORPGs end up like this and PvP gets boring.

    About 20 000 different skills I think it would be possible to make them generate automatically from template.

    But anyway I have many more ideas which mabey you will like.
