Scientific Node "fast travel"???

i remember reading or herd in a livestream that the scientific node would be able to create/build a portal for fast travel of some kind. Like maybe just to teleport back to node.
And that it will be the only type of node with the ability to do this.
cant really remember if it was said, or just my imagination. Can anyone help me out on this one?

  • It was said.  Only Scientific nodes will have that ability.
  • I'm not sure they said portal.
But, the devs have said several times that a Scientific Metropolis will be able to build a limited fast travel network.
  • Do you think that means you be able to travel from one scientific node to another or maybe one way travel to other places
  • Ding ding, dingding, ding ding...

  • I don't think you'll be able to go from node to node.. Maybe Way points.
  • It may just be fast travel within that Scientifc node. From one end to the other or one section of "town" to the other

This is what I had in my head when I heard it.

Pretty sure they have said that it allows you to travel/teleport around the nodes zone of influence.
  • I don't recall the word teleport being used.
Anyone have a dev quote that includes teleport?
  • Well I'm not sure they used the word teleport, but some form of fast travel. Within the node area of influence I'd imagine.
to be honest, I have no idea how it would work.

    Any thoughts?

Would be be nice if it was like a one way trip back to node, from anywhere. On a timer. Considering no other node would have this system, it would have to be balanced.

    @Dygz
I wasn't trying to say it would be teleport, I was saying that the area you can fast travel in is the nodes ZOI. I'll edit it for you. He has said air travel will be something only available for Science Metros so that is probably the fast travel he has been talking about.
  • Sounds like its a one way trip. Might be useful if it takes you straight to a mine. Maybe I am just not understanding how big a node gets to get the benefits from it.
  • From @GMSteven:

"A scientific metropolis will offer fast travel to nodes within its zone of influence."

    Video link.
  • Ah I see so you will be able to travel to any nodes around it that does sound usefull

    No worries.
Mostly just hoping someone who remembers hearing teleport has a dev quote - in case I missed it.
  • I am hoping for no Fast travel, and extremely limited flying mounts that perhaps even have a form a fatigue so that you can not just fly continuously and skip over the world content / players.
With that said I am an open minded individual who can understand why others may want these options. For me personally I have experienced how fast travel, flight paths, flying mounts, aquatic mounts etc have lessened the since of scale, adventure, and companionship in other MMORPG's. Walking from Halas to Freeport to meet up with some companions comes to mind as a great adventure and treasured memory all because of the journey itself.
  • *meh*
Walking from Halas to Freeport is not much of an adventure once you've outleveled the zones in a static world.

    Ashes has limited fast travel.
    And rare flying mounts.
No clue how far flying mounts can travel or whether they have fatigue.
  • With science research making travel faster, I tend to assume this means something like researching better wheels, wagons, horse tack, etc.  Or even better roads.
  • I expect It'll be reliant on a lot of factors, and fast travel will be limited to a certain range to prevent you know, teleporting to a caravan and destroying it with a 10:1 superiority or something. they really should be very careful in balancing this stuff out.
  • Bridges? Air ships?
(no clue if the fast travel will be far enough to require air ships)

I'm betting on some sort of vehicles like Archages Goblin Wagons or Airships. Either or.
  • I say make everyone crawl on their bellies at a snail's pace, through broken glass, spiders and fishing hooks. Think of the stories you would have.

What's been said is that you can travel within the node's ZOI. ZOIs can also overlap, apparently. So it might be nice to be able to instantly travel all the way across a metropolis as that will be quite a distance, but we won't ever be able to jump further than that as science metro citizens.
  • Yes, as a node advances from each stage it's ZOI will increase. Say  you have a level 5 city, with a couple level 3 villages in surrounding nodes. Once that city becomes a level 6 metropolis, it's ZOI may very well encompass those smaller village nodes, limiting their development to say max level 4. If you are really wanting your village to become the big boy in the area, you are going to have to take care of that pesky, huge metropolis stopping you from developing further. I think the number of max concurrent metropolis on a server was kicked around at 5? So for active servers people are going to want to tear down the big boys when they can to make their little slice of heaven advance.

The other statement that caught my eye was the "Walking from Halas to Freeport is not much of an adventure once you've outleveled the zones in a static world." They stated that "zones" would not have a static level. You could be owning a tribe of goblins, run around the bend in the road, and straight into an ice troll 10 levels above you. So the "meh, I just have to crawl along till I get to my higher level zone where I can grind." should be eliminated. Areas near civilization should be safer than remote areas in the wild, but not always the case since you have corruption events happening on some basis.
  • Yes. Ashes is not EQ.

But in EQ the mob levels were also spread out like it will be here.
  • I will burn your city and fast travel in the name of my God

Which, by chance, happens to be your name as well...?

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the price of tea in China.
(Even though the mob levels in Ashes will not be spread out the same way that mob levels are spread out in EQ,)
