Accessibility for disabled gamers

I have been poking around looking for information on how accessible this game might be, with no real results other than what can be inferred from the videos.  MMO's are often a vital means of socialization for many individuals with disabilities (in my case, a neurologically disabled veteran) and with the potential I have seen in this one it would be nice to have a thread where folks interested in the subject matter might be able to share information, maybe hear back from the devs, etc.

One thing I have noticed right off that made me happy was the lack of green text and effects mixed in with red, something that should be industry standard but is often overlooked, so for my color blind friends out there, this looks promising.

I am also hoping that aspects of siege warfare will be viable for folks who might be poor when it comes to any sort of twitch combat, but given a bit more time could be perfectly capable of aiming a catapult, etc.  Little tweaks like that where folks can contribute in different ways can go a long ways towards increased accessibility and feelings of accomplishment.

I know the game is still early in development, so I hoping to see more on this in the future. Obviously a lot of adaptations for various individuals come down to accessories vs in game programming but it would be nice to hear about any thoughts the devs have put into the subject matter in regards to what is not an insignificant chunk of MMO players. Understandably one cannot re-work a game completely around the vast amount of human disability, but some very basic ideas can greatly increase accessibility for many without having undue effect on game balance.

Comments

  • Giving this input so early will make it easier for IS @Yrdach. I hope they are watching these forums and are able to take this into account.
  • oh lord yes to the red-green stuff.  ESO is bloody difficult because I cant for the life of me see the red ground effects.  A simple filter works to correct this for the most part.
  • @Yrdach
I'm sure things will work out   :)
The Devs stated in their FAQ that they'll be doing a lot of Source-Code optimization.
And i don't see why they would not accommodate - that's more customers for them. And more  Forum-Members to add too  o:)
  • In this day and age, everyone should be allowed to play games no matter what difficulties and I'm glad to see the industry is making change to make that a reality, so I hope ashes will also do the same
  • If they make the game as accessibility friendly as possible, it will help the image of the game and of course they will sell more copies.

I guess it depends how much the financial cost will be, compared to how many people need the accessibility features.
  • Yes, definetly hoping for accessibility options myself for sight issues. Usually text is too small to read for me.
  • As @lexmax stated, I too hope IS is reading these threads.   Just to do something to adjust colors and light effects is a good start.  Color blindness is only one problem of sight effected by colors and lights.  Most games text size can be enlarged or color changed.  To enable interface sizing helps also.
Would be nice if they had an adviser.   :D
  • I hope they take in consideration not only disabled players but those of us who are much older than average who have some of the same issues: slower response times, vision, etc.
  • Well I hope they pay attention as well, this is a fantastic little thread I must say, and I am heartened to see a nice community response here.  I hope when (if?) they come across this thread that they might consider reaching out to some of the community or maybe an organization like Ablegamers for input.
