Crafting concern

I'm concerned that the way they approach the crafting/gathering in this game, is to hardcore. I remember back in old wow, that it could be hard, to get the mats you needed, or an item from a different crafter. And that was in a game, that had an auction system. This game will just have an billboard thingy. So unless you are playing alts, with friends or a guild, where you decide to work together on this. I think/fear, people will struggle on this part, and it will be a huge pain, that can discorage people. You claim to say, on about some of your things. That this is apparently what people want. Have they directly said it, or are you assuming, because people are liking a certain game, with certain features. I can add an example. I recently startet playing Black desert online. I don't care for all the features. I don't like that we  have to repair our items, and i hate that the items lose durability when you do. But i still play this game. But this game was somewhat cheap, and there isn't a subscribtion fee. I think people will deal with less, when they have to pay each month. Another example. When Wildstart was created, people had prior to it, said they wanted more hardcore raids. So they made them. And it turned out, people really didn't want it, anyway. And that game ended up f2p

  • I understand your concern but the direction Ashes is going is to encourage cooperative play with guilds and other players. Ashes is trying to make crafting work just like the Trinity system  with Tank, Healer, and DPS where you have to rely on others. I am sure solo players will be able to thrive is some gameplay but in order to accomplish more you will need friends or at least the help from others.
  • Can definitely see your concern about relying on other people. Though, this is meant to be a highly social game focusing on interaction between players in order to achieve great things. You mention BDO, but most of the activities you do there you can do solo, most of the time it really feels like a single-player game.
I think as long as Intrepid Studios puts in mechanics that encourages players to work and help each other, it can become very interesting. However, it all depends on them managing to make this right. It is easy to say that it "all depends on what players choose to do", but for that to happen, the proper mechanics need to be in place for that to be possible to be executed successfully.
  • Nice post @insomnia, and I can not only see where you're coming from but I'd go as far as to say that others here have shared your concerns. Intrepid intend for Ashes to encourage cooperation and interaction like no other MMO and the little we know so far, suggests that crafting won't be any different. It's likely to be a mix of mats gathering but also cooperating with crafters who'll have special recipes or special abilities thanks to their training/or special drops. That'll be one element of a player driven economy that Intrepid want in this game so I think you hold onto your concerns for a wee while, until we know more. :)
  • I hate to break it to some people but this is a massive online game, a world that will be shaped by everyone. It only makes sense that working with other people will you grow much quicker than if you're doing it alone. It really makes no sense to come into an MMO thinking you can accomplish everything solo or at the same pace as people who are working with others.

Another thing you should probably know is that Steven feels, like myself, that not everything should be handed to a player. Players should feel accomplished when they achieve a task, not because they achieved it, but because they actually worked for it. The systems in the game seemed to be designed to require effort and cooperation and those achievements make you stand out to yourself and to other players and some will even be unique.
  • I think that it should be easier to rely on others in Ashes because we will be staying in the same towns instead of spreading out all over the place.

Should be that we are able to rely on our neighbors as we traditionally rely on NPCs.
But, we will have to see how the social experiment works in practice.
  • From what I gather some materials will only be had by those who trade period.  Epic monster drops to certain ores. Regardless of how long you mine or the amount of people you have. Frankly that's the way it should be. You need an active trade for those whose profession is trading from city to city.
