I Only Know About This Today

BioWare was established in February 1995 by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, Trent Oster, Brent Oster, Marcel Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. The three doctors (Muzyka, Zeschuk, Yip) had recently graduated together from medical school at the University of Alberta;[2] they had done some programming for use in med school and played video games for recreation, eventually deciding to develop their own.[3] Their success in the medical field provided them with the funding they needed to launch a video game company. To make their first game, they pooled their resources, which resulted in capital of $100,000.[3]

I honestly didn't know the origins of Bioware until this morning. Upon reading this, the whole backstory sounds vaguely familiar.

I hope Intrepid Studio becomes the next Bioware and create the next groundbreaking game of its genre.

Interestingly, Mythic Entertainment (Created DAoC) was eaten by EA (which I personally think was one of the reasons why WAR failed)
  • I think everyone on these forums is going to agree EA = enemy.

I'd heard the name for BioWare was because the name picked was submitted by one of the founders who had medical degrees, but I didn't know all if them did!
  • Thanks for sharing!
  • Wow. Who knew. Interesting stuff. I reckon theres probably quite a few weird and wonderful stories like this floating around.

To be fair, I think they just want to distribute good games to as many people as possible.

    KIDDING.

Yes, EA is the devil. The day they bought Maxis was a dark day for gaming history. Bioware seemingly stood up for what they believed in, but eventually was never recognisable (for me) again.
