Cross Server Arena?

Has there been any discussion on if Arenas will be cross server?

If there is going to be an ELO type system, it would greatly help with matchmaking.

  • I really hope so because the arenas are instanced.
Nothing has been confirmed yet so we don't know but I really hope so ^^.
  • For far no released details on that yet ;)
  • This topic was beat to death last week, but since there are no search functions available on the forums can see how you missed it. The plan is for all servers to be separate. Since every server is unique, there is no gear that is just used for pvp, and various other logistical reasons, I would be very surprised if they went cross-server. The screams of "UNFAIR!!" you would hear from people who come from a server where a certain world boss, dungeon, or raid had not been unlocked, thus not allowing for certain recipes and gear upgrades to occur vs another server that had unlocked that gear would consume time and effort better spent on other development activities rather than "chasing the dragon" that is worrying about arena balance via cross-server. Then again, I could be totally wrong and they plan to have it in place from day one of alpha 1.

Just joined the community last week, so there is a lot I have missed :)

Hopefully the gear discrepancies are not that big in Arenas. Would prefer it to be more skill based then gear based, but thats just me.

You seem to be a knowledgeable fellow, any idea if they are endgame only? Or will we be able to gain xp through arena?
  • Arenas are a fairly new thing, only were revealed with the PAX stuff, so not a whole lot of clarification out there. They most likely will be used while leveling, are part of the military node leadership mechanic, and you will get exp for them. Endgame is a dirty word for the developers, I guess level cap might be a better way to express it. They haven't released what restrictions on arena group there will be. We know that currently there are  5 tiers of armor planned, so whether they base it on levels or tiers of gear to be determined. Over the next month as PAX approaches we should get more info. And as always...we are a few months out from any form of playable alpha, and a few years from release, so anything put out know will most likely change.
  • cool, thanks for the update
  • I wouldn't mind cross server with the arena being instanced it would be possible to have some of the instances cross while others don't
  • Every indication we have been given from the streams leads me the believe that we will stay isolated to our own server. At least at the start...
  • i would love to see cross server arenas. i know they have already mentioned they plan on server vs server large scale battles.
  • I would love to see cross server competition. Arenas, naval battles, even cross server guild wars (large scale version of an Arena).

Can you link that quote? I follow pretty much everything I can here and have heard the exact opposite. Since servers develop independently you may have huge gear (read ilvl) disparities between servers. Some content and crafting recipes may have dropped on one server, but not on another, thus giving access to abilities and loot on one server that the other doesn't have. So while it is a great idea and I don't see it hurting server economies if there is no loot incentive that you can't get on your own server already, I just don't see them throwing it into the mix.
  • arena is the single worst excuse for pvp in MMO history. it is nothing but a silly little sideshow meant to keep the youngest interested. Proper pvp as we all know is open world where you are responsible for yourself. You never know if, when where who or what is going to happen. No such thing as fair fights...

That seems like a very narrow view of arena and pvp. Arena is both good and healthy for this game, as is open world pvp. Ideally we'll have both.
  • If you aspire to lead a military node, you are going to have to learn to love arena, because you are going to spend a lot of time there.
  • It would make sense if arena pulled from numerous servers, but we don't have a definitive answer yet.
  • I would absolutely hope not. Cross city, yes. But cross server, no thanks.

One of the best things an MMO can offer is a sense of community. Given an adequate playerbase, having crossrealm anything, only seeks to insure that the chances of you ever seeing the same opponents again are slim. Perhaps a few times in a row, at first, but when you try and play again some other day. You may never see them again.

If you keep it server only, the player pool is a lot smaller, and you'll see familiar faces. (read names) Faces you can actually encounter in the world. I am fairly sure almost everyone here has a tail of how a friendship bloomed because of this. I've had the same. Seeing the same people daily, stopping them from destroying an outpost, world PvP back and forth, for no other reason than it was fun to do. Build a bond with them.

The moment they introduced cross server shenanigans, this came to an end I hardly saw the same players anymore. And people eventually just became a faceless <insert class here>

So, again, please, no cross server anything.
