Theres a big difference between class locked and class focused.
Theres a big difference between race locked and race focused.
As long as there is penalties to go with buffs to allow unique identity, it should allow harmonisation and variety without imbalance.
It also allows the concept of tuned gear, tuned food, tuned craft, tuned armour, tuned builds. You can utilise what you like, but some things will suit you better than others. It enables unique individuals to be both relevant and functional.
