REALLY off topic: Have you ever noticed...

I know I'm going to get grief for this, because it's really stupid. I mean really, really stupid. But stupid or not this has become an annoying bit of gristle in my teeth that I can't stop picking at. I just have to vent, because every time I notice this, it's like chewing on tin foil.

Have you ever noticed in a TV show, any TV show, that when one character is talking to another character they will often say that character's name at the end of a sentence - but hesitate just a second before they do. It's not a dramatic pause, it's a hesitation.

So, John is talking to Mary and will say something like, "Ok, I think we should all settle down. I'm going to leave now *hesitate* Mary". Or "Let's go get those evil villains *hesitate* Bruce!", "I don't think that's a good idea *hesitate* Robin."

It's like they can't remember who they're talking to! It could be the same character they've talked to for 5 years, and they can't remember each other's %@%$ name! It happens a lot, and it's drives me crazy! *sob*

Thank you for letting me vent *hesitate* everyone. I feel better now.

They are also put in as dialog placeholders for people who are reading to keep their brains on track of which dialog is being said to who. When you speak to people in the real world, you have no need to use their names, because you know who and can see who you are talking to. But in writing it is easy for those conceptually challenged to get lost on the page if too much dialog is strung together without identifying pronouns and names. So, on TV, the actors are just reading stuff the way it was written for them.

  • The actors propably have hard time using the correct names sometimes when they see their fellow actor in scene and the name that comes to their mind is the actor's real name not the character's name :D

That makes sense. However, I don't care why lol It bugs me! I come from a theater background (which is very different from TV, of course), but never did TV work, so I didn't know why characters kept using each others names so often. However, memorization is memorization. Just know your freakin' lines, so you don't have to pause to remember who you're talking to!

True, in TV one is memorizing new lines each week in a very short amount of time, so I understand that it is a challenge. They're professionals (well, presumably), though, getting paid a crap load of money, so work harder, so that I won't be annoyed!

(This is all tongue in cheek, if anyone is wondering if I'm an idiot. Well, I am, but not because of someone saying their lines on TV).
