And I'm Freeeeeee, Freehold-in

As this shameless title rip off from a Tom Petty song would suggest, this thread is about caravans.

I was really excited to see this game have open world housing, and that player owned structures would be part of a growing city. I could see people and guilds making small villages out of freeholds which would add a cool depth to the game.

Like there could be a village we're it's full of children who live in corn, or a village that looks like it's from 1867 but is actually in a modern day nature preserve.

Freeholds grant us a wide variety of game options too. You could own a freehold that looks run down and people break down in front of it, come in to call for help and you chase them around with an axe.

You could also run an inn with your mother, but players who stay there get murdered until one finds out your mother is dead and you dress up like her.

There's also a chance you can make your freehold a museum, filled with wax figures, but they are real people!

Just a few of the many potential things I see freeholds being used for.  What are some other thoughts?

  • I  would love to be able to make a sudo village out of freeholds would also be nice to run caravans from freehold to town and town to freehold
  • One of the main problems earlier games like Ultima and SWG had was the player housing sprawl that impeded gameplay. While I am sure there will be a couple areas that would allow you to place a group of freeholds near each other, in most cases it sounds like finding a space that meets their terrain placement requirements will be occasional and not available everywhere. Don't forget about guildhalls, which may be even larger plots. Also adds to their meaningful conflict pillar, if placement is limited, then people will be motivated to tear nodes down early, so they can place their own freeholds in that sweet spot someone else had.

Caravans will be able to travel from freehold to town and back. If you watch the one video where they dungeon crawl and visit Stevens freehold, you can see a half loaded caravan sitting in the front yard.
  • My guild on AA made a wee village and was awesome :3
We had it in Perinoor (PvP zone) and was really good fun especially when it came to moving our Trade Packs :3 The Risk/Reward elements of our location was amazing fun and although occasionally we lost our packs is a scuffle - it made the game more excting.
    Village in development ^
I really hope for something similar in Ashes and I'd love to see caravan trades from freeholds to cities ^^ Lots of fun to be had :3
  • I'll be happy so long as our group of friends can create our very own red light district.
  • Could be a transport that does not seem as though it is worth anything, very run down, guarded by what appears to be homeless folk. In reality, they are guarding an incredibly valuable package and are highly trained with more protection hiding out of sight.

Would be a funny bait for like a noob bandit guild who would end up getting their arse handed to them, pardon my french.
  • Meth. I need a Freehold with caravan access for meth.
  • @XombieCrisis  I assume you are a fan of breaking bad  :#
  • Karthos, I think i would have to be on what Tom Petty is on before he starts his shows to stay in your "Bates"  motel!

@Zid honestly couldn't get into it, the actor that plays Jesse is terrible and it ruined my immersion. I'm just fond of meth...

    But nonstop?
  • @XombieCrisis meth is no joke.

Remind me when I get on discord to tell you about all my meth stories from when I was in emergency services.

Story time with @Karthos is the best time!

  • My PoV on this is, I would love setting up a farm somewhere BUT open PvP being what it is, eventually a group will come along and ransack/raze it to the ground (I know because I experienced that exact scenario before)

So in principle it's a great ideal but the reality is I would probably be much happier with an apartment.

From my understanding freeholds can only be sieged after the node they are in losses a siege
  • @PlagueMonk I believe Freeholds are not open to being destroyed except for a period of time after a successful siege.  So, hopefully that offers you a bit of solace that it will not be a frequent occurrence but is still possible.

I have started to think about which type of housing that I would hope to have and I agree with PlagueMonk that I would be happier in a city.  I would love to get one of the original city homes for a node but I think that is rather unlikely.  Would probably work out that I spend an all-nighter as the node reaches the appropriate level and 30 seconds before the transformation I fall asleep only to awake with QWERTY stamped into my forehead, a short in my keyboard from the drool and all the homes sold hours ago.  But maybe I can get one of the later rounds of city houses.

As for a freehold, this raises interesting possibilities.  I like the sleeper descriptions above with the simple looking structures hiding something interesting.  Assuming this is possible I would build a simple house with a picket fence and a small garden.  Then I would dig out and reinforce the basement to hold the mother of all crafting set ups, maybe a forge.  Air flow would be an interesting problem to solve but it would be fun.

And no @XombieCrisis, you can not borrow some dark little corner of the basement for an 'Alchemy Laboratory' .  Sorry.

TLDR: I am not allowed to cook meth in @Marenor's dwelling....
  • Thank you XombieCrisis, by the time I am finished the WoT I always forget the TL:DR.  I will try to keep it in mind.
  • Someone else can find the relevant quotes and post them, but as stated so far @Marenor and @Ninja Shadow are correct. Freeholds can only be attacked for a 2 hour period after a successful node siege. The time that it takes to declare a node siege varies based on level of the node, and the cost to declare it (we don't know yet if it is just gold, or a mixture of gold and resources) is also based on level. The example given was one day period for level 1, 2 days for level 2, and so on. At the end of that time period there is a 2 hour siege with objectives that have to be met. If the attacking group wins, then there is a further 2 hours where freeholds can be attacked. After that whether there is a win or loss the node goes into a cooldown period where it cannot be sieged again for 10x the initial siege declaration. So 10 days at level 1, 20 at level 2, and so on.
Since Freeholds can't be placed in a zones sphere of influence until it is level 3, it will take a good bit of effort to take down that particular node, since to reach level 3 it needs a fairly active base of players contributing to it to have reached level 3. Are you taking a chance to get the "best" spot by placing your freehold as soon as the node pops to level 3? Sure, but that is the risk/reward factor. Wait too long and there might not be "good" spots available in the nodes ZOI.
  • I pledged to Kickstarter mainly for the Freeholds and the Guildhall appearance first and foremost. Second reason is to develop this hella awesome game. >v<
  • A freehold made completely out of chocolate and cookies. Liquid chocolate well. Cookies growing on chocolate trees. And cows that give chocolate milk.

Caravan access to import even more chocolate and cookies.

    I wonder...

Could we do a reality show in a freehold?

Get Flava Flav and Verne Troyer
