Do you like the way the Cleric holds his staff?

It looks like the Cleric is about to brain someone with a baseball bat. What do you guys think? Should it be changed or left alone?

I thought that too when I was watching twitch. Seems a little off but I mean it is pre-alpha soo whatever ha.
  • A little odd. Not a deal breaker.
  • There's no option for "Why the hell does anyone care?!"
  • It's a pretty hefty staff ... seems logical in how its held.

If you look at european martial arts wielding it like that is a way that has been done historically, there are many ways to use staves effectively and that is one of them.
  •  I don't see anything wrong with it. She carries it like its kinda heavy and she is about to knock someone out. Seems legit.
  • I really expected the staff cleric to do similar moves as in this gif.

  • I thought it was not very Cleric like.  It's a staff but it's being held like a maul or something.  It needs to be held like how the Chanter in Aion holds it.
  • They wield their staff like a hammer. I like it cause I would prefer a hammer.
  • Looks like a heavy burden to him/her tbh. Should hold it in a more professional way. Maybe put it in the back and swing it front super-fastly when he/she enters combat etc.
  • using like a melee weapon .thing is should be range magic damage weapon but not a deal beaker like the idea something new
  • Maby do Claric a Mid-Range spell- staff atacks " fire  staff element - do fire balls " ice - ice spikes "  Electric  - Thuders etc.
  • LOL

Now I expect something like this.

    and this

  • I expected the poll to be more one-sided. This is interesting :)
  • My first thought, too, was it looked like holding a baseball bat.  Perhaps a position a little closer to the chest.
  • Just watching that livestream I think it looks great how the cleric holds the staff. How else would you hold a massive staff like that?
  • After watching the game play again, it's alright.  I feel as though when the cleric is walking or running around they would be holding the staff with one hand, and then go 2 handed when they are about to fight.  Not sure how you would put them on alert, but it would look more natural IMO.
  • Cleric wields the Staff like a Baseball Bat ... no :|

Pre-Alpha build, best bet it'll be changed.
  • I don't mind it, but I guess leaning more towards having it changed.
  • Well I watched the footage expecting to follow the popular opinion here.  However,  The more I watched the more I liked it.  If you look at the staff it is top heavy with all the weight at the top.  Now stop thinking of it as a Merlin type magic casting staff and more like a warriors war-hammer that is just a focus for the magic but actual there to be smashed across some unsuspecting opponent.  No skillful  war hammer user would hold the hammer high up the shaft.  So based on that weapons use theory I am going to climb into my flame proof hazmat suit and say, Yes I liked it.

I have to agree with @PJ_Rydecker .If you want to use a staff as a physical weapon as well as magical then it has to be handled like a physical melee weapon. So it would appear like a baseball bat to many as a consequence. Especially if it is heavy enough to require two hands.
So for me its more a question of it looks weird because we are not used to it rather than it being .....wrong ?

  • I mean, in the given setting I think this makes a lot of sense.
Just take in the world again, it's a hostile, corrupted wilder land, devoid of civilization and Clerics are the lifeline out there.
At least that's how I feel they are portrayed with their plate armor and the only healers.
A Cleric needs to be fit to be able to wielding that protective armor instead of being a pure caster relying on magical skills only. I like that.
(btw, one issue I always had was the endless endurance everyone had even tho they where like 95% of their waking time studying some kind of magical fire bolts, yeah yeah game mechanics)
Since thee already has that base strength it makes sense to be able to use the staff as an actual weapon, not just decorative flavor and stat booster.
We have only seen 8 out of numerous skills to come too, it all might fit more to the image they want the Cleric to have later on.

No, I think it looks terrible and stiff to me - a huge eye sore and just cumbersome.
  • ok, I didn't understand this thread until I took the time to actually watch some footage and all I have to say is no, just no. He is holding/swinging that thing like a maul or a 2 handed sword. Now if you want to stick a maul in his hands then YES, it will work but that is not the way you should be carrying a staff around and swinging it......imho.

There are plenty of games out there that use it more appropriately. I would highly recommend looking at a few of them if you think using it as a baseball bat is correct.

BTW that's some great footage and would highly recommend watching it carefully because that's not how the Cleric is holding/wielding his weapon.

Even if  its similar to a Two-Sword ... there are other stances you can take with a Two-Handed Sword as shown in this Link:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2h38AEoy8w

    2:41 - 2:47

( You can watch the Part 1, part 2 and part 3 Clips if you like .. but the Time-Stamp i suggested should be more than enough )
  • For a Cleric, I'm not a fan of the current staff-holding; I'm sure it will change in time, so I'm not too worried.

The current version reminds me of the way Dargo held his big 2-Handed Sword in Farscape.
