Light in dark places

Saw a post about mining to deep and got me wondering.
What will the mechanics be for dark places with no light?

Personally I'd prefer us having to provide the light ourselves, either by magical means or torches etc. I have never liked how there are 'magical forever burning' torches already in place in some of these places abandoned for millenials.

Which would you prefer?

Comments

  • WTS torches, the best in this node
  • Wasn't this hinted at in the early trailers? I would have sworn there was talk of having to use torches. They showed one of the mages utilities is a magic light she can summon.

  • Based on the brief dungeon play videos shows thus far it does seem to indicate light will need to be player provided. Such as the light wisps the mage had.
  • I take nothing for granted before it is confirmed :|
  • That wording is biased! It depends on the dark place, magical stones that burn forever are very common in fantasy settings, of course I don't want them everywhere, but like for special dungeons, as part of a story being told.

That goes under Natural light! Iz not biased! *stares*
And yh, special dungeons are fine, I mean in general like deep mines, caverns etc as well :P

I WANT A MIX OF BOTH:

Personally I'd love a mixture of places that have their own torch system (torches on walls can look awesome and provide great ambience), and places that need us to bring our own light.

I can say only one thing. I hate MMOs that are so dark that you can't see s**t and where you don't even have an option of making your own light.

Some developers think extensive dark is cool. --- No... not being able to see s**t isn't cool. It majorly sucks.
  • We know from the early mage videos that she will have a spell that provides light, so I am thinking that we will find a mix of both.
  • Lighting has been confirmed to be player provided.

  • I love the idea of creating our own light. I loved Diablo, how some items had a + light and it increased the radius you could see.

There was some natural light, but in dark places there was dark and I loved that play of light and shadow, and seeing monsters appear out of the darkness.

Ty Lexmax, I had not seen that quote yet :)
  • My question about the quote is just: Is that the case everywhere(except places where it would be more realistic that NPCs are maintaining the fire, for example in a city) or will you still encounter random torches from time to time and your own is only neccessary in special places?

I mean in special places, at night for example visibility would be lower as it is darker but there are still starlight and moonlight (I am just assuming there is a moon)

Special places like, crypts/caves where no one has set foot in centuries, deep mines etc
  • can I just have dark vision as my eyes are fireballs anyway

  • I'll always have enough gas for my torches ;)
  • some of my best MMO memories are running around EQ after I stayed out late and the sun went down, 95% blind as a bat, desperately trying to get back to town before I ran into something that would eat me.  The simple task of planning some method of light gave me so much immersion in that game, and IMO, it was under utilized.  I hope the game is punishingly hard, but that's just me.
  • Some places should be lighted by default, some are not (rarly). Imagine that you use torches again and again just because you can't see walls. Meh.

Also sucks when players can just increase their gamma to see [farther] in the dark.  I'd rather the server dictate whether the players can see or not and how far.
  • I do hope we also get ambient light from star light and the moon/moons, and they go through phases so there are times when all you will have is star light, yet when the moon/moons are full you could have enough light to navigate by and see figures nearby. There should be some hidden places that require you to bring your own light source, hidden corners that may reveal secrets if just a little light is shone upon them.

I think it would depend on the locations. Natural light or non-player lighting will be in places where you would expect npc to be or had been e.g a camp or a passing npc at night holding a torch. Same for moonlight, if the surface is exposed in a region where natural light can reach it then I'm happy for the environment to be "light" in terms of what is realistic. Ofcourse you can (if you want to) enhance what you can see using player made torches or skills (such as the mages) to illuminate your surroundings.

In terms of the question - should areas that "realistically" no npc has been too/inhabited or natural light can reach - such as in the depth of an undiscovered cave, then yes we should need to provide the light ourselves. For me this will enhance the adventure and will make these areas more dangerous to explore :3 What might lurk in the dark? ;o

And that is indeed the question I'm asking around :3

Probably just @nagash I did hear he likes to lurk.

He doesn't have much of a choice with those thighs.
  • I see the good in player dependent lighting and the bad.  All well and good Mr.  Magical mage conjured a wisp but what happens when a sword and board tank is caught out after dark?  The majority of his skills are based on that trusty shield but now he has to wield a torch in his off hand. If there isn't a means for him to produce a light of his own he's restricted to playing during the day or running with a mage.  You'd need to provide potions or some alternative  and if that ends up being the case it will simply negate the point as everyone will just stock the potions.  Great for alchemist  I suppose though.
  • At one point it was mentioned in a early livestream of belt-carried lantern accessories, so that should negate the concern about having to carry a torch.

    I'm good with it then.
  • We need 200% brightness.
