Should weather condition effect how you craft?

I remember a game called Light and dark, back before it turned into what it is now,  they had a wild idea. What if you went into areas of wild weather, or the season change, then while crafting say a sword, that weapon would take on the conditions of that weather at the time. So for example, if you were in the high mountains, in a blizzard, and you forged a sword, that weapon would became a sword of the blizzard. Of course you wouldn't get it right away, and it would be a rare strike of the hammer to make it so.

So in AoC should we see weather marks on your weapons and armor, or whatever your making> It could be one of the grand master type of things, and a way to help make items rare from players in the game. Along with putting your name marked on your items, so people know who made them.

What do you guys think?

  • I'd prefer materials deciding the effects of weapons instead of chance.
ie Frost like materials give it Ice effects etc
  • As Ziltch mentioned, materials should decide the outcome of a weapon effect, not random weather.

Although I wouldn't mind a slight chance to get a even better weapon. Eg, normally you would get XYZ Sword of Frost, but there could a 0,1% chance to get a better version, like Ultimate XYZ Sword of Frost or maybe have base stats randomized with each craft.

It's kinda boring to craft a weapon once and be done with it. Instead you could gamble and craft weapons until you get the stats you want.
  • I agree with above ^^
We already know that many materials will be seasonal and unique to zones (encouraging trade between Nodes).
Perhaps as suggested some material types might influence the characteristics of a crafted item ^^

Remember aswell that Devs are discussing whether season/weather will influence some skills. Another thing they were discussing was if your freehold is located in certain places the environment/terrain may have an impact on your crafting. I believe the example they gave in the stream was that if you freehold was positioned near a river then it might boost agriculture artisian ventures.

I look forward to learning more about the relationships of crafting with other aspects of Ashes of Creation ^^
  • Not sure about crafting, but certain weather conditions for enchanting, maybe? Want a lightning enchant? Well, there's a low chance of it happening in the desert. I could see that being cool.

As for crafting, certain specific crafting sites, maybe? Like the fires of mount Doom.

Racial crafting could be cool too, as a pure aesthetic choice.
  • I think it should affect what you can gather not the crafting, such as some food should grow at different times or ore is easy to find after a volcano erupts, but crafting should stay the same. If any change were to happen, I would guess the cost of raw materials would go up as supply is limited for some materials in some seasons if I understand what the devs have said.

    No.
Short and sweet aha xD love it ^^
  • As stated before, it makes more sense to have the materials influence attributes. I don't want to put you or your idea down in any way. I just feel this might just be a bit too extra, if you know what I mean.

    No.

    I like this answer
  • I support the No.
  • I also support the no. Enchant maybe, but craft no.
  • Well my thinking was just adding a bonus to whatever your crafting, it doesn't have to be a major boost. Adding charms or crystals to weapons and armor for enhancement is fine, I have no issue with doing it that way. Maybe a common ground could be, if you want items of winter, you can only find them in the winter season, or if you want items of fire, you can only find them on the hottest days. Just a thought.
  • Your suggestion may actually be part of the game design - we just don't know all of the ways weather/seasons will affect our abilities.

Maybe a +3% casting speed for ice skills and ranged skills buff in certain very snowy areas during winter. Or +2% attack speed increase for close combat and fire spells in the summer (warmer conditions make it easier to move muscles). Hmm.. trying to think of ways to make weather conditions affect things whilst still making sense.
  • I will only say that I am strongly against any gamble and lottery.

Crafting (and anything else) should be effort based and not gambling based. I'm not going to play another AA or BDO.
  • Nah, I really dig what he's saying.

As for the material side of things, you people are thinking too small..
You get your materials, say for example to make a glass sword. You get glass ore, iron ore and some gold for the hilt or something..
Smashing this sword together on any old town anvil will give you a glass sword..

However, if you take your materials up to a mountain peak and locate a special forge up in the mountains and forge your glass sword during a winter blizzard storm, you'll end up with your same glass sword, with additional cold damage buff..

Or additional fire damage if you go to the volcano during a fire storm eruption in summer heat wave..

Secret under water city anvil in a cave, during some sort of tsunami event as the seas drain, giving you addition water damage on your forged weapons.. etc..
  • Now that's what I am talking about, and at the same time I can see what the others want too. Maybe we will get both in the game, point is lets make crafting fun, while at the same time have these special things that can add that extra kick to what your doing.

Certain item-altering events (like the blizzard storm) activated by node progression perhaps? Like military node reaching metropolis near mountain peaks activate blizzard storm.. so players rush their equipment and materials to the mountain peaks to craft, while others might use the opportunity to steal materials.

Maybe even crafting jewelry in cursed altars/dungeons giving the items dark themed buffs. To be honest, I think this level of complexity tying gear and world has little chance of happening in AoC, but it's a fun topic to think about.
  • @Granthor, I would not want to gather all the materials for an EPIC Sword, go high upon a mountain, wait for a blizzard, make the sword and end up with a regular sword. I think the materials point(s) made in this thread conveys my feelings.

However, I really do like this idea and I have made a note. Next time I run a D&D game I assure you going into a volcano to craft will be the only way my players can obtain a flaming sword! :naughty:
  • Liking the idea if it is a method to apply a skin to your creation; the rng to add a very small buff would be a slight plus but should be small enough so as not to be mandatory for the uber raiders or PvP'rs.

As an option it would be interesting.
  • Since weather affects spells. It would be wierd if it didnt had a impact on crafting. Maybe in cold times you need more coal or stuff to smelt your ores visaversa.
  • On the one hand I love it
    on the other...
If you have the mega frost sword of chill, why should it inflict a debuff on someone? maybe like spells it's going to be more attuned to the season it was made in, maybe it struggles to work in the desert and barely dents a teddy bear
That's much more along the lines Id expect the spells to take.

That wouldn't exactly be great though, you'd end up with needing to find multiple weapons sets...
euch, I knew what point I was going to make, but it's gone now...

Hmmn. I didn't see anyone else mention a debuff.
I think the expectation is that it would be harder to craft a mega frost sword of chill in the heat of summer and easier to craft in the cold of winter.
Some recipes might require the cold of winter.

And we might expect the Frost effects from the sword to be more powerful in cold weather and less powerful in hot weather.

But, now that you mention it, it would be cool if that mega frost sword of chill were a cursed weapon that also damaged the wielder a bit when used in cold weather due to the Frost being exceptionally strong.
Or, depending on the enchantment, could be cursed such that it damages the wielder if used during the heat of summer.

Cursed weapons might be rare, but would be nice to have in the game.

    Language again.
A weather condition, be it debuff, extra damage.
I would hope that my overall meaning came through.

  • Oh, "it".
I read "it" as referring to the sword, but your clarification indicates "it" was intended to refer to weather condition.

  • This would be super rad. As someone who is looking into making my own armor and weapons, this would mean i would have to craft different styles of armor and weapons for the season depending on the task. I think that this would have a super welcome place within Ashes!
    Good idea!

  • I like how this example swords name just keeps getting longer and more complex..

    Frost sword..
    Sword of the blizzard..
    Mega frost sword of chill..
Ultimate frozen bacon carving mega ice death slicing sword of the chill blizzard.. o.O
  • I think it should affect how you enchant, because who puts a blacksmith on top of a mountain? =p
  • Anime's?
  • no thanks

with the amount of stuff they have planned for this game
I rather they spend their time and money on other stuff
rather then something silly like this
