F2P Business Model "The Fix"

This model is designed to keep F2Pers playing. Entice them to contribute in the long run. It's design is to keep a Subscribing base, allow for cosmetic upgrades without reducing F2P into fodder. This IMO is a model that would retain a larger base of players, encourage contribution to company success financially and not diminish the games competitiveness. No P2W approach. Greed can kill this, so company might need consider restraint and use a carrot approach.

Three Coin Types
  • F2P
  • In Game (copper, silver, gold, platinum)
  • Sub Premium (cannot be traded or Sold)
Three Gear Tiers. Cosmetic upgrades.
  • Tier 1 F2P - cosmetically, bland, without detail, worn torn and rusty.Once F2P attains Sub they can use NPC or player artisan to upgrade. In game Sub, Sub Premium rules may apply (Quest and/or Coin)
  • Tier 2 Sub - quality detail, polished
  • Tier 3 Sub Premium - Superb detailing, polished, inlaid, additional features
  • Tier 4 Sub Premium - every other skin you want to have but can't afford
All gear sold, bought, crafted is basic Tier 1 or 2 depending on status.
All Tier gear can be sold but reverts back to Tier 1 or Tier 2 depending on purchasers status F2P or Sub.
All Tier 1 can be taken to NPC or player Artisan an upgraded to Tier 2 or better requiring proper status and Coin.
F2P can use Tier 2 if they acquired it while Sub.
F2P can not sell Tier 2 as Tier 2.
Both Tier 1 and 2 can be bought or Sold by Sub.

F2P and Coin
  • Only usable or acquirable by F2Pers
  • Only usable for 1 month Sub
  • Only acquire enough Coin for 1 month Sub
  • Can not transfer F2P Coin.
  • Can continue to F2P once acquiring enough Coin for 1 month and choose when to activate Sub
  • F2P Coins acquired by Quest lines or daily log ins (?)  Quest line should take 20 days minimum (or?). to acquire Sub. No help quest line. Quest line Items no-trade only.  Devs can simplify by just requiring login. 20 Days minimum (or?)
  • F2P will not receive any Sub Premium Coins when activating earned Sub.
  • F2P Could ear Sub Premium Coins through special events when F2P Sub active.
  • F2P is afforded full access competitive wise.
  • All items are equal for F2P and Sub Stat wise. Whether acquired by craft, quest, auctioned, player gifted or in game Coin, purchase, is attainable. What a Sub is required to do to get their gear is what's required for F2P. Gear of equal competitive value.
  • F2P receives Tier 1 gear.
  • F2P can craft quest buy or trade Tier 1 housing implements.
  • F2P cannot become Guild Leader.
  • Once F2P attains Sub they can attain Tier 2.
  • What F2P attains while Sub they retain when Sub expires.
  • Once Sub expires F2P can repeat the process to acquire Sub again.
  • F2P pets are of equal value Stat wise.
  • F2P Trains, quests or purchases a pet same as Sub, F2P receives the basic pet.
Examples - Basic pet Canine
  • F2P Tier 1 Shepherd
  • Sub Tier 2 Timber Wolf
  • Sub Premium Tier 3 Hell hound
  • Sub Premium Tier 4 every other canine skin you want to have but can't afford.
Any all or none. Pet Tiers could require Coin, Premium Coin as well as requiring advancing quest lines depending on Tier or pet.

Subs, Coin and Premium.
  • Subs pay $15 subscription.
  • Subs receives 10 (or?) Sub Premium Coins.
  • Subs can buy Sub Premium Coin.
  • Subs cannot sell Sub Premium Coin.
  • Sub Premium Coin cannot be account transferred.
  • Sub cannot sell or trade Premium items unless converting item to Tier 1-2.
  • Sub can remove retain skins of Tier 3-4 Items.
  • Skins may be replaced on designated items only.
  • Items include gear, pets, housing/fortress decorations/implements.
  • ALL cosmetic Tiers gear is stat and competitively equal.
  • Sub in game Coin (copper, silver, gold, platinum)
  • In game Coin can be used by F2P.
  • Sub is everything F2P capable.
  • Sub can quest craft or buy Tier 2 gear.
  • Sub can craft quest buy or trade Tier 2 housing and guild/fortress implements
  • Sub can choose Tier 1 or 2 when selecting quest reward.
  • Sub is unable to craft buy any items which power boosts, advances skill level or increases the speed in which they level above that of F2P. Because there is none.
How Guild Fortress are Furnished Tier 2
  • There is no Tier 1 guild implements or decorations.
  • Tier 2  can be Guild quested, or crafted by Sub and F2P.
  • F2P can participate in fortress creation but not lead it.

Tier 3-4

  • Tier 3-4 implements, decorations are Sub Premium.
  • Sub Premium still needs to be crafted or quested before upgrading.
  • Tier 3-4 do not improve abilities or skills.
  • Guild players can decide to contribute there own fortress implement or decoration.
  • If a player contributes an item and chooses to leave guild the implement decoration goes with them.
  • The Guild Leader can create a Premium Coin pool which allows him to upgrade implements and decorations,
  • If a player contributes Coin to Premium pool and leaves Guild they receive the Coin they contributed to the pool.
  • If the pool doesn't have enough Coin to pay departing player than an implement or decoration is liquidated at it's initial purchase price so player can be paid.
  • This allows every player the right to retain all their guild investment and retain that Premium Coin for personal purchases or another guilds benefit they may choose to join..
Idea is to stop the F2P revolving door. They are all possible providers to the bottom line. Company cash. Suggest everyone have to initially buy in first months subscription. Those who choose to go F2P will. They won't fill less competitive just won't look the part. Toss the F2P some carrot Premium Coins on holidays so when they earn Sub they might throw a few bucks into purchasing more coin so they look a little classier. They may sub a month for the additional 10? Premium Coins to get that item they've been eyeing. Subs are going to sub, people with cash are going to spend it and F2Pers maybe not all but some may come around and contribute a little to the game they were allowed to truly enjoy. It's hard to enjoy a game when you're reduced to fodder.

So have at it. Give your input. Who knows maybe it will work for everyone, F2P P2P and Devs pay.

Comments

  • I had posted this in new arrivals by accident, Flip one of our members mentioned how the P2P Model was set when first comers bought game time, so this topic is mute where this games concerned.
  • there is a hole wall of text here about F2P which seems irrelevant since AoC will be sub based! IMO most f2p models fail miserable for various reasons, mostly because the company distributing is getting greedy!

I for one am really happy that for once their is a sandbox mmo coming out purely sub based! No hidden costs, no gimmick system with all sorts of "currency" or "resources" if you pay more! Just straight forward ... what i put in to it in time, is what i get out of it!

It's cool and all that you would go trough these lengths to "sell" a F2P model, but i sincerely hope no one will ever feel it would be a viable option for AoC! I would be sorely disappointed if it ever gets installed!

Seems like a copy of Revelation Online's model. I can't say that I agree this is a viable long term model and I agree with @Boes83 I sincerely hope this won't apply to AoC.
  • No.

Cash shop should only offer extra options in addition to what's available in game, and NOT a better looking options compared to what's available in game.

I understand your apprehension. The state and direction of other Mmorpg's is why I started Ashes. You don't have to agree with the pricing structure of the crowdsourcing add ons, but rest assured Ashes will never include monetization practices that require players to pay to win or stay competitive. And there will be an abundance of in game cosmetics that are achievable and rare, some on par with marketplace cosmetics

  • Like Unknown mentioned, Steven is 100% against anything even close to P2W.  Cash shop will never be more than cosmetic items, and even those won't be over the top or completely outclassing what's available in game.  He's discussed this extensively in multiple streams / FAQs / Discord, ect.  There will never be a play option other than sub, and the cash option will never allow you to exchange cash for anything that gives your character an advantage, or even a convenience.

Not trying to rain on being creative or anything, but any monitization outside of the subscription / cosmetics is not a discussion here, it's already ruled out.

    Well, let's think:

F2P (always equals) cash shop leveling, illegal currency trading, OP or newest weapons/gear that can (basically) be bought, accounts being created but only 1-5% actually playing (i.e Runescape, 250 million acounts registered, but online player base is never over 1 million... or half ... or half of that... basically, its not consistently in the 100k's each day.), gear and leveling promoted over any sense of community (TERA), cuts in content for some players which ruins the experience... and on and on.

We've ALL come from F2P MMO"s with sad hearts and this game wants to target that specific problem that always leads to the fall of an MMO or lessening in playerbase.

  • No thank you.
  • Equal competition is what is of main importance. Thanx Steven. The intent of the write up was an attempt to find a way to increase the player base without sacrificing competition or funding. I understand the difficulties in bringing that to fruition. I took a shot :) Like Flip said it had been decided before I wrote my first word. We can all take solace in what is being offered is a fair and competitive playing field.
    Appreciate ya'lls input.
  • never been a huge fan of anything f2p.

So you played a pvp server good job :)

I gotta agree with you on Tera in the pvp servers it is like that, but if you go to the pve or roleplay servers the communities are some of the friendliest I have ever seen and I have played too many games to count from sub-based (WoW with its terrible community) to ftp games such as tera, last chaos, and LoL. I can safely say Tera is a game that has many flaws but quickly discourages you from trying to power up gear by dropping money into the game because the only things that are worth anything in the game are costumes the rest you get hugely ripped off. The great part about it is they don't hide the fact that they don't want you trying to ptw because it's not how they designed the game originally. It was originally sub-based but had to go ftp since not too many people were able to play such a demanding game when it came out. In the last 2 or 3 years it became semi-easily accessible to people with lower-end PCs. Back to the communities, they are great once you reach endgame and join a decent sized active guild. I have quite a few guildies from Tera waiting for AoC because it looks like it will solve all the problems Tera had to begin with.

Well I went off on a weird rant there have fun reading it

    Nooooooooooooooooooooo x1000000000

God no. Hell no. No way Jose. The second I saw "F2P" you lost me. Any game that I've played that has a "F2P" component loses big time in the battle against bots and gold spamming because the spammers just make 10 new free accounts for every account banned.

Your entire system is gating content behind a pay wall system.

This is P2W. Literally the definition of it. Any game that let's touch "pay for convenience" is purposefully inconveniencing you in hopes you pay. No game is truly "F2P" without having huge disadvantages to playing that way.

This idea is no good, and goes totally against everything this game and community is about, at least from my stand point.
