Lore wise I think epyrean elves and ren'kai orcs are most likely to be in favor of slavery while nikua dwarves would be probably most opposed to it. Gameplay wise as others said it could work only with npcs but even that would probably have to be limited.
Well thta is all going to depend if they actually have any npc cities or allow you to visit the old worlds of the factions.

I honestly don't see the orc races wanting to participate in any form of slavery. If anything I see both human factions being the ones to perpetrate the systems of enslavement. The Kaelar as they basically sound no different then the ancient Egyptians or Romans with the empire coming before the individual. Another thought that crosses my head is the slave revolt of Oriath act V in Path of Exil.

Vaelune is what I think of the caravan that picked up the general in the movie Gladiator. Another one is the Arab empire in ancient times and even the British slave trade.
I don't think that we will be allowed to visit old worlds, if they had enough power to simply travel through those gates whenever they want then they would only send a scarce amount of people through the gates to cultivate land and clear monsters (obviously players so this could reach thousands or more)

Another thing is that it's near impossible for IS to create those extra worlds, I mean the effort that would go into it is insane.
Well if that is the case then they should at least start releasing lore about the cultures, history, politics, and maybe a small explanation on why they are leaving their world by the end or early next year. If anything they can probably create a small introduction site similar to Rift, where you get the basics taught to you before they throw you to the wolves in the open world.

I wasn't expecting the visitation to the old world as I know that would be insane. But a starting area before they throw you into the new world.

It's laready stated that we begin the game by choosing one of the gates in the world, there will obviously be lore regarding the old worlds, and the lore on their culture, history, politics etc. will all obviously be transferred to Verra. It's not like they will change all their traditions just because they are moving to a new world.

Of course, but it never hurts to offer some basic stuff early for people to actually expand with fan stories. Of course they wouldn't change cultures and traditions that easily, but I am skeptical they are going to be that detailed like Rift was with lore.
  • I would totally dislike a slavery system. I think just losing your node or something is enough grief to receive from a PKer. Plus, other games have tried it and it gets old really fast.
  • Well here is a thought. What about each guild that took a node gets NPC slaves that they can use to defend their trade routes or use in defenses in their nodes and what not.

I think it would be an interesting thing to add as it would give added benefit to winning or losing a siege.
  • These slaves would be for free instead of having to hire players or NPCs to protect or transport things.
  • Dont see a problem with player generated content provided players can also opt out of the system and/or have their own counter mechanics.
  • AnduinKayvaan, I expect if there is slavery in AoC it would be very much like the Argonian/Dunmer situation in ESO as you mentioned, because it makes for very easy to write lore and quest development.  I don't see the need for slavery to be in game in any other way personally.

Well, we can have minions and thralls.
I think we have to pay them wages, though.

I doubt that slaves are going to be a thing for us to have to contemplate.
No, this would null the summoner class which relies on summoning companions/minions, if we could pay for things like that then summoners would have a lot less usage.
We won't be using non-summoned minions for the same type of stuff we use summoned minions for... for the most part.

Having npc slaves to carry your stuff would be cool, but there are too many people out there that can't tell the difference between fiction and reality so they would cry racism.
  • what about left handed cannibals? is there any precident for them in the lore?

If all of the races are slaves, it probably isn't racist.
If only light-skinned, European-looking races are slaves it might not be racist.
If only dark-skinned and fantasy-color races are slaves it's inherently racist.

But, more importantly, players are not going to enjoy giving up player agency to be slaves to other players.
Just like players are not going to enjoy giving up player agency to sit in a prison.

In Ashes, we will have NPC minions that we can use as guards for our Freeholds and to escort our caravans.
  • Some friends and I had a suggestion of not necessarily slavery. But lets say you have a farm, but you do a lot of other stuff besides just maintaining the farm but you know a friend who loves to just craft and harvest all day long. You two could RP that you're the master and they are the "slave". But to keep it fair, he gets a small like minimum wage style profit out of helping you out on your farm.

This is assuming you can allow friends to help you harvest your land.
  • Reported for mentioning slavery in anything but the accepted anti-racist "evil white man" context.

  • Slavery would be good, for economic purposes as well as the hierarchy between poor and rich people. A cool way to distinct yourself from others is by buying titles making you more important to the world than other. We all start poor and build our place in the world.
  • I'm a slave to Dwarven fashion.
Rumbleforge watches the room stare at him blankly.
    Rumbleforge shrugs and walks away.

We should just make the shorties our slaves
  • We should just make the shorties our slaves
You're lucky that there is no "Unlike" or "Disagree" button right now, because if there was - I'd be pressing it VERY hard!

Too short to reach it ;)

that another point to autumn ^^
  • I like the idea that it once may have existed, and thus be part of some character/race lore but that this is a venture to a new world, so its very much all hands on deck to build a utopia - that would involve no slavery.

Perhaps a captured soldier / PoW mechanic  might be a way they could do anything to create a worker type of role in the same sense, that would entice expansionism but less slaughter?... playing with ideas here to be honest
