A skinner in AoC, don't waste the kill.

Raise your hands if your going to be a Hunter with the skills of skinning?

Ok this is one area I hope is done right in AoC. In so many games I played, if your a skinner, they really don't do it justice. Maybe you get a few hides, and meat of the beast when killed is there already. Maybe you get a few parts you can't use, just breaks my heart.

I am hoping the following happens:

1. You kill a dragon as a group, everyone takes the treasure and runs off but you.

2. You take out your skinners knife, and get to work on the body.

3. It takes time to break down the body, but after a couple minutes you score bigtime.

4. You get Dragon Eyes

5. You get Dragon Scales

6. You get dragon Meat

7. You get the Bones

8. You get the claws and teeth

Every piece you take is usable by different artisans, so your have a market for what you now have. I used the Dragon as an example, cause IMO it would be a top dollar prize item to et in the game on all levels.

The Dragon eyes and teeth might have use in a potion.

The Claws in making a weapon.

The Scales and Bone in Armor making.

The Meat of a dragon well, who doesn't want Dragon Steaks? Yummmm

I just hope this skill is done right, and nothing is wasted when doing that skill.

  • I  think skinning is a very under utilize skill in many mmos
  • Would you be able to scavenge others kills?

I thought about this for awhile and originally thought, "no, this seems like someone gaining more than their co-players by doing the same amount of work." I also thought "then they would come along and scavenge things 'non-skinners' killed and left behind." Both of these thoughts encouraged me to originally want to say no.

However, if the skill skinner requires the same amount of time and effort to level, and approaching max-level when being able to harvest as much as the example includes, I think it would be fair play.

I am unfamiliar with this skill in the games I play, but I do think it would be a skill Ashes could benefit from!
  • Skinning and herb gathering are always my go to trade skills in games. This is something I would totally love to see as you get far into your skinning level. At first you barely get any full hides, then slowly you get full hides, then you learn to process the rest of it at max level. +1, anything to make crafting, gathering, and processing more important, more rewarding, and more fun
  • Totally agree that it is usually just a filler profession. "Oh yeah we need someone who can skin stuff so we can build that ONE item everyone needs, but for nothing else."
I hope, if it is implemented, it interconnects well as you mentioned.
The whole loot from skinning doesn't necesserily have to go to the hunter, it could be distributed per rng just as well. Maybe the hunter has a higher chance for the best stuff. (Hint: >>Good<<Party loot options please)
That way it might be encouraging to have specifically a hunter/miner/herbalist with you for certain activities.
  • @Grisu that is something I actually hadn't thought about. It would be really interesting to see that kind of overlap with professions and pve. Something that doesn't make it mandatory to have someone of that profession in your party but provides a benefit. Another awesome way they can make professions matter throughout the life of the game.
  • One of the big plus Ashes has is the relevance of professions, so i dearly hope they pull through with it all the way.
  • In your hypothetical situation, what if there are say three skinners, who gets the eyes? Or fangs? Or claws for that matter. That is assuming multiple people can work on skinning a big boss.
  • Could possibly have gathering/processing rolls built in. Same concept as loot rolls, but with the "skinner only" part of the loot.

That is a good question, maybe roll to see who can skin the kill. But not every skinner will be at that same level I am thinking, the lower level guy might take the common stuff, but then a skilled guy can get a ton more from the same body. Then you can have the lower guy might not even have the skills to try to chop up a dragon type, when they normally only can do small creatures?

  • I don't know, I was asking. But rolling for it might work. Or the mats go into a guild bank, like what happened during Onyxia kills for example.
  • I don't like the thought of loot auto-depositing into guild banks. With group adventuring it wouldn't be bad, but for a world boss where multiple players engaged, not all in guilds, it wouldn't be as fair. Not everything in life has to be fair, but guilds don't always need a helping hand.

If the dragon is attacking a single city, caused from that node hitting level 6, then perhaps the mats could go into the cities fund to help pay for possible rebuilding or future building/defense etc. That would still be less fair to non-node citizens that wanted to participate though.

I like the thought of the rolls with the best loot going to those of the highest level first with >good< loot options that distributed through their group. A new skinner might not get a ton of loot from skinning the dragon, but it should be a nice bonus to that proficiency level.
  • I did not mean automatic. I meant the skinner puts it there, so tailors can make the cloaks required to take down Nefarian. In my example anyway.
  • In case of a worldboss I would simply assume that everyone who has the appropriate skill and participated can skin the boss once for say 10minutes. It might not make sense to get 100 claws from a 20 claws boss but then again, gameplay > immersion. That boss might not happen again for a year or longer, there should be at least enough mats for a few people to build gear from it, not just a single person since it is a group effort.
After all it's a big choice, at some point you will need to repair that gear with materials from the boss. :3
