Enchanters

Ashes said they would release the base classes and add more later....As an EQ Enchanter I am disappointed to see this class as a secondary sub class name. Especially since Lady Galadriel is a key character in the Tolkien world. I can see why people often fear the Enchanter class as no one really likes having their character dominated and forced to jump off a cliff or beat the other party members in their party with their dominated or ( charmed ) character for a period of time. Their are many benefits to this class despite peoples fears of it and I would hate to see an over simplified version of it. Enchanters are very good crowd control.... If you are or were an Enchanter please speak up......Or one of the players we tortured even speak up... Maybe replace Enchanter sub class name with Charmer or Mesmer or the like... Jeff

  • This confuses me on several levels.

What are you disappointed about? A class name?
  • i kinda thought of enchanters as one who could bring a physical being to their emotions; more summoning different aspects of themselves rather than the control of another's thoughts. furthermore i would expect a name along the lines of "charmer" to be one who controls the targets mind. just my 2 cents :)
  • the way I understand it none of those 64 classes is a sub-class, I was led to believe each and everyone of those, including Enchanter is a full fledged Class.
  • I always thought of enchanters as those who enchant items more than people. However, I am an avid D&D player and Enchantment is clearly used for mind/emotion control. In text/conversation I still use the term Enchanter as a synonym for "magic item creator."

However a Summoner/Bard could be a caster that focuses on charming creatures or mind control of creatures. Maybe a really strong version of Summoner that focuses on absolute control of the summoned?

I am not particularly fond of the name "Songcaller" but Bard/Summoner is going to be the first class combo I test. I would have named it something else, "Cursed Minstrel" or something more relative to the character I have in mind, but that wouldn't mean jack to everyone else.

As for the "secondary" aspect of the name: Enchanter is a hybrid of two classes, but they all are. Even the Fighter/Fighter is a Weapon Master, not a Fighter. So I am not sure what you are trying to imply.

Did you want Enchanter to be a Base class that was possible to mix with all the other base classes? I think that is a Bard
  • Yeah I think your basic concept will fit into the bard archetype. My hopes are that the bard will be the supporty, buffs/debuffs/cc type class. So don’t get too sad! Once we get the bard revealed it might just be exactly what you’re looking for.

All 64 classes are full fledged classes based on 8 archetypes. The mage/bard/summoner, etc are not classes, they are archetypes. The classes are the ones you see in the small boxes, the 64 named ones.
  • I think OP was referring specifically to EQ enchanters. In EQ, the "holy trinity" of tank/dps/healer was actually a quaternity  which included the support/crowd control archetype which has largely been missing from MMO's since Vanguard/EQ/EQ2. The Enchanter (believe it was called psionicist in Vanguard) was the master CC'er and every group wanted one. They didn't just crowd control though, they had mana regen and attack speed buffs, some great damage spells, and debuffs other than CC's.

I too am interested in the combat mechanics as it relates to the need for crowd control. If anyone has any info on this and if it is meant to make it into the game it would be much appreciated if you could point me in that direction!
  • There is a variety of crowd control and counters planned for each archetype. Some will be better at it than others. Until they actually release the abilities for the 4 unfinished archetypes it is all pure speculation. So faux outrage over stuff that hasn't been decided yet is truly a waste of time. They have a plan and are sticking to it, and so far, according to them, are on time with their master development schedule milestones. So buckle up and enjoy the ride.
  • Enchanter is one of the 64 classes, I wouldn't call it secondary, unless you refer to the 8 archetypes (the 8 that make up the classes) as primary, well I'm somehow wondering how enchanters will end up, they are a combo of bards and summoners, but I always saw enchanters as people who bestow specail (or magical) effects on their surrounding or objects.
  • Would be cool if there would be also an enchanting profession for enchanting armor and weapon people usually pay a good amount of money for it and you can help the guild a lot.
