Travel and Travel times

So as the title says I am just wondering about the travel and travel times, I heard there is going to be no quick travel, but can you catch a coach from one place to the next and how long would it take to get from East to West borders of the game.

  • I believe it was said it will take 24 real hours to go from one side of the map to the other walking. There will be mounts so that time can be reduced
  • wow 24 rl hours is pretty large, I am looking forward to that.
  • That's going to be an insane map size then if this is accurate. Looking forward to exploring that!
  • I read this at first as "time travel".

I really really enjoyed the Caverns of Time concept in WoW.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a dungeon in Ashes that wisks you back to pre- incident Verra?

I would love this, but honestly it seems a bit unreal(istic). Would like it if you could share your sources @Booliemantin.
  • Travel by ship should help speed out the travel between coast to coast, Mounts might help to cut your time, but I don't see it cutting it a lot if the map will be that huge.
  • If travel times are that long then attack a castle on the other side would be a real stretch and I don't see it being doable which is great.
  • As long as we do not know the actual size of the world and its metrics, you may say:

  • It is pure speculation, but probably close to accurate. People who think that they are going to be able to roam all over the game in a day are going to be in for a shock. If IS can pull off what has been promised, it might take you much longer than 24 hours to travel from side to side. Think about what we know about node sizes. There are 5 castles confirmed in game for GvG pvp. Each of those castles has 3 military nodes attached to it. We don't have confirmation if they will be smaller than regular nodes yet, but since they can be built up to level 4, they will need to have a minimum area for exp generation and resource gathering like any other node. So that is 15 mandatory military nodes. Since we know there can be a maximum of 5 metropolis on a single server to balance out node types you are looking at a spread of 60-100 nodes just to meet the basic math they they have put out on how the node system works. Alpha 0 shown in the Dec 15th livestream is said to be 3 nodes. Extrapolate from that, and you truly have a huge space.
Now for Alpha 1 we may just see a map with 20-40 nodes, with them adding and expanding to the map all through the next year and half. Fairly easy for them to put in the invisible walls at server map edge then make an announcement. "There was a massive set of earthquakes that have opened mountain passes leading to new areas. An large sinkholes to the Underrealm have also opened!" over the course of testing and development.
  • I'm curious.  While I'm glad the world is big, I'm also concerned about game play and the effects it will have on it.

Teleportation?  Horses?  Boats?  Some other means to reduce?

An extreme use case of two friends needing 12 hours real-time (who are on opposite ends of the world) to meet up just by walking I don't think is realistic.  But that's just me.  (It would be 6 if the world wraps around)
  • There are 5 different starting areas that you can choose from and coordinate with friends if you want to be near each other. If for some reason one of you runs to the other side of the map, then yes, it is going to be a pain to meet up. If you can even make it that far solo without dying repeatedly and incurring a huge exp debt. There will be no fast travel planned in game. They have however hinted at a possible carriage system for travel between major nodes that could be built. Not an instant click and you are there, but probably go to a stablemaster, click on a list of available destinations, pay a fee, and you are autopathed to the stablemaster on the far end. What is not known is if that travel could be attacked enroute. Most likely yes. Things that are going to let you avoid conflict are being frowned upon.

There are extensive plans for mounts of varying abilities and speeds planned. A whole taming, breeding, and sale mechanic for them.

Ship and boats, overwater combat and water caravan system all planned and confirmed as part of the Kickstarter stretch goals. Underwater content planned(confirmed) and possible underwater nodes (unconfirmed)

Scientific nodes that achieve Metropolis status (extremely rare and hard to do) will have the option to build a ZOI wide fast travel system (probably airships similar to WOW zeppelins). Note, that is not server wide to all nodes, just to built up nodes within the metropolis zone of influence.

The world will most likely not wraparound. We know that updates to the game are planned every 4-6 weeks for smaller content and quarterly for larger updates. Since free-form flying will only be experienced by .001 percent of a max server population at any given time, natural terrain barriers put in place by them (mountain ranges, volcanoes, and other impassable terrain) will allow them to open new passages to new "nodes" as needed to expand the game and its available size and content.

That is awesome. Imagine an adventure to get to the dungeon so that it takes you days to reach instead of just slaping a Cooldown on the portal. I know it's pure speculation, but if it turns out like this it will be epic.
  • One of the reasons I loved Morrowind, sometimes I just have to walk for hours to find a location with destination directions given as a series of landmarks. Great times being lost!
  • Morrowind was the best Elderscroll game in my opinion, the travel, exploration and dungeon delving was awesome.
So having a large area to be able to explore and take over will be a welcome sight in my eyes.
  • Wow, 24 hours of real time?  I'll need to hitch a ride on the in-game brothel wagon to stay amused!
  • I am very skeptical that it is going to be anywhere close to 24 hours of real time unless it comes straight from the horses mouth. At best, I would think it is more plausible that it could be max of 10 hours (if that).  But we have until next year to see if their claims of a massive map is going to be true if they do an alpha 1 by then.
  • I would really like the source of this 24 hours to walk from one side to another. I do NOT see this being anywhere near realistic. I get that mounts and ships can decrease the time it takes to travel but not that many people want to spend hours just to get from one location to another location.
I cannot discuss alpha 0, but even using that data, 24 hours doesn't seem realistic.
