How many players are already playing?
I want to buy a pre order - pack and i'm curious how many players are already playing , so i can make myself a picture how big the playerbase right now is

Even if you buy a pre-order now - you will still not be able to play with the current players. Thing is that pre-orders will only be able to play Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Beta 1, Beta 2. Alpha 0 and Beta 0 phases are invites only. As you probably know, AoE is currently at Alpha 0 phase.
Talking about the numbers - this info is not reachable in the public right now. They told that there are 400k+ registered users, 40k of them have already backed / pre-ordered the project.
In any case, pre-order it anyway and jump into the train.
