Should there be the option to display what you are selling?

We will have vendors in the form of carts and stands, maybe a few NPC vendors too.

But I got to thinking, it would be nice to be able to display a few of your goods, so everyone can see what is there in general. So if you have a cart full of plnets for potions, your cart with display that, if you have weapons, again it will show it. Then you have the very rare items, this also should be displayed on the carts or stands. Maybe it would shine bright, to get every ones attention, showing it's a very rare item for sell.

This is a wish list type of request, I know something like this will be cool, for the guy like me that sell in game items.

So what does everyone think about this idea? Display or not display?

  • This topic came up quite awhile back, and the general consensus was yes.
I am under the impression IS was going to have a general design based on what you were selling, so if you were selling weapons you would have a weapon oriented theme to your shop. I could be wrong.

I think it would be awesome to be able to display the actual items, but I think that should open them up for theft. If only a similar theme/skin is used I don't think thievery would be a thing, since there would be no items to grab & run with.

Yeah. I dont have a problem with indicators that are of a 'generic type' nature, but going down to individual items could set you up for targeting and would probably be too code and dev time intensive anyway.

All these little things add up to a painfully slow experience if you go OTT. So I agree with the general flavour of the idea to add meaning and variety to the game, without the extreme.
  • I think what @Azathoth says is true. It did come up in a stream a while back and the general premise was yes. the idea from what I gathered was the cart/store would display a general aesthetic to what you're selling i.e you're selling a lot of potions then the cart will display a lot of potions. I don't think it'll go into great detail though such as you're selling a legendary greataxe and on the side of the cart you can see such an axe.
  • I think the whole problem with theft is actually great for this game regardless of how difficult it may be to implement. Quests in ashes are supposed to be different from your generic mmo quests of kill 10 this or gather 10 that. There could be npc thieves or player thieves. A merchant who was robbed would be allowed to see the robbers name and have the ability to set up a bounty styled quest on a request board in the town or something. Now obviously multiple players may take up the quest but ultimately only one person would be able to complete it. Of course theres the issue of but how do we find one thief player in such a large world and what if the thief sells the stolen item. This part is probably the most complicated. Maybe the stolen property can't be sold or discarded for say 2-3h after stealing (2-3h of in game time. Otherwise you could steal and logout like a bit*h). And the thief's name flashes or changes colour to indicate that theyve stolen something. An added interesting point would be if Rogue primary classes were better at stealing and hiding to wait out the 2-3h of time.

Seems a lengthy process yes but id love to see complex systems and quest lines for ashes like this

I am not sure if you played UO, Ultima Online, But in that game you could do as you say and steal from players and NPCs. It got so bad they had to add blessing to the special magic items, cause the player thief got so good. What happened if they got cause stealing in towns? GUARDS! POOF one shot kill. Then whatever was on their body, most of the time wasn't much, you could take without flagging yourself. But if someone else tried to loot his body? GUARDS Poof one shot kill. Now you got an angry player on the ground, cause he was looting someone that stole from you, his body was open to being looted. I do recall once there was a ton of bodies by the bank one day, and a lot of mad players too. lol
