Pets

I hope this game doesnt overload us with pets, like WoW. One game that does it right is old-school runescape, where in the game its very rare to get a pet, which is mainly dropped from a boss, its feel good to get the pet and they all look good and unquie. What do you guys think

I think there should be many, many pets. And at the same time, I don't want all of them to be easy to get. Nor Do I want it to be a grind.
Sure have some basic pets that are easy. But I want many pets to be made exclusive by making it hard to get them through other means different to grinding. Like puzzles, long quest chains, hidden locations that move around the map, boss drops when you have completed certain tasks before the encounter, drops from hidden bosses that only spawn when certain requirements are met, drops while breeding mounts in a certain specific way etc.... But not a grind.
I would hate to have to kill this same mob 1000 times or do this quest 50 times to get my pets.
I Hate repetitive stuff and especially repetitive stuff that is locked behind a cooldown/time-gate.
  • there should be both. some easy some hard, either way lots of pets.
  • Depends if the pets have some kind of function or if they are purely cosmetic. If they work like in BDO where they can collect gear then they should be a bit more scarce.
  • I want to be hard and few. I also hope my pet can loot for me as well.

We can tame animals in the world as pets, so expect pets to be plentiful rather than few.
    (Plus pet breeding as well.)
  • If we are talking vanity pets then I think there should be a bit of both. The common ones with some really special ones that took dedication and/or know-how to get.

The one thing I don't like is limited time items. Not seasonal... that's fine, but limited. Probably like the ones in the monthly sale/kickstarter/spring >.> Guess I'll have to just deal with it though.
  • Pets should be common, everyone should be able to get a pet if they want one... but some should be rare or hard to get/find. that way you will see a variety of pets all the time, but you may marvel at someones awesome rare pet when you see it.
I think ESO did pretty decent with the variety of pets. I dislike how you must buy them all though. finding a sweet pet would be nice.
  • As much as I hate to admit it, I think pets should be able to be killed.  I think this would actually make pets (and pet-taming, by proxy) more valuable and more meaningful.

Having a hunting dog with you? Makes perfect sense.
Having a house cat hunting with you?  Sure, make it a huge pain in the rear to get that thing out of a tree every 5 minutes for people who thought it was a good idea.

Making pets a 'grind' to get doesn't sound appealing to me, unless its part of animal husbandry or breeding for special/unique pets and mounts.
  • I wish all pets could loot, and then people would just want pets for looks and atmosphere.  I also agree that there should be a mix of common, uncommon, and rare.
  • I recently played a game, which I will not mention the name of. In that game, taming was available to everyone and all you had to do was pick an animal, have a scroll and do a quick time event to obtain the animal. I've never been so disgusted in all my life with a game.
You should be able to tame every animal, that I get. Animals have wants, needs and can be coerced in real life to become friends. How much of a friend and how easy that is to achieve varies in the real world, and for the sake of immersion it should vary in the game world.
    My ideal system would be;
Anyone can tame any animal and as many as they want BUT
taming would be based on the level of the creature, your knowledge of the creature, actually doing some things that gain the creature's trust, and also a use of your natural base skills.
Say for example you are a mage taming an owl. You know that owls eat mice, are out at night, and you naturally can use magic. So you cast a spell on it, it becomes receptive to your night offering of a mouse, and depending on how good you are at it, and how resistant the owl is, you now have a new friend!
Or you are a tank taming a tiger. You know that tigers like to eat rabbits, are aggressive if you approach them, and are found in a certain biome. You go to that biome, engage in a fight with one, shield bash it, then when it comes to, it sees your rabbit offering. Depending on the level and your experience, you now have a new friend!
Or you are a cleric taming a stray cat. You offer a mouse and heal the wounds of the cat. Considering their eagerness to be domestic, it's an easy win and you now have a new friend!

To me that would be more realistic and challenging in the right ways. That is my hope. If it is quick time taming I will not participate at all. I want it to be difficult, but immersive. I don't even think grinding for a pet is all that great, but I can appreciate that perhaps in a story line there was a creature that occasionally liked to hang out by a boss and you either saved it or inspired it by killing the boss.
  • I'm a backer and I have a phoenix on the way. I really hope getting a look-a-like won't be a thing for anyone that didn't back to my level or above.
