    As much as an old MP fan that I am sometimes these things can be a bit too over the top.

    A subtle homage to most anything can be slid in without making it unfunny. A few referencing old crpg games ("Going Ice skating? Got a great deal on these here Secret Silver Blades.") and the like could be fun to find without being too obtrusive.
