Am I able to go ahead and purchase items in the store and have the Embers apply towards those or will the Embers become live once the game is launched?

those embers are for the in-game cash shop so I would guess you won't see them until we get an in-game cash shop at release. of course it may happen before launch but I wouldn't hold my breath.
