Am I the only one?

The only one that finds combat somewhat hohum, from a hype perspective. There seems to be a large number of people raving about how good it looks, the way things flow so many minds blown it would seem. But honestly for me its like ok here is the action combat portion of the combat system ok fair enough, but its not the AOC combat system we will have come launch its just a portion.

Now don't get me wrong the combat system is a very important part of any game, and it has to be fun, engaging, tactical, and require a good level of skill to become proficient at. But this is an MMORPG and while a good combat system will carry a game for a while it is the other systems that will carry you through a game for years. The crafting, housing, trade, guild, story, questing, lore, raiding, plus many other systems that all come together to form these games we call MMORPG's.

What I guess I am trying to ask is are there any others out there who just arnt hyped for combat as much as for the other systems that are for the most part yet to be revealed. Well revealed in any great depth.

  • Biggest reason I am hyped for Ashes is the nodes system but boats, lore and religion system are on among of reasons I am hyped too and cant wait to learn more.

    Not the only one!

I see this as step 1 and with all the community feedback we'll see from A1 will help sculpt AoC into a product our community desires.

What I see with the A1 preview is that the team are working hard with their development, have made significant progress from A0 but have still a long way to go ^^ That is the way it should be at the stage in development ^^

What I'm excited for is to see the progress and development from this stage onward. Since there is no NDA i feel it's going to open the community up more and the time is gonna go by quick :D

*cough* I'm patiently waiting for gathering mechanics!
  • You're not the only one. I know of several in my guild and guild alliance who also think, like you, that there is more important things to focus on outside of combat.
  • I'm in the same boat as you @Varkun while the combat does look really nice it's not what I'm looking forward to the most. For me the main pull of ashes is the world itself, I've said this in other threads, but for me, a game can have ok combat, but if the world and the lore are fantastic then I have no problems with playing. I know not everyone will agree with me but that the joy of MMORPGs you can be whoever you want to be.

    @nagash

Well said! I didn't come to Ashes of Creation for combat but for everything else the world has to offer. The sense of community always wins me over in the end <3

I totally agree with you here. Saying that, for a lot of players including myself it is the combat, pvp/wars, sieges and also the PvE content that keep them playing for the long run. So far Ashes seems to have every base covered and will cater to most types of players and give them something to truly work towards and master

    @Diura

So far Ashes seems to have a great community  We can only hope it carries over into game!

I have more concern about the communities hyped reaction to the combat.

The general community have no idea what an alpha is, they really don't. They don't understand hey significantly things can change from alpha, to beta, and then to release.  They might like to think they understand what alpha is, but they don't. I have seen this time and time again.

I have played games in alpha that were awesome, and then by the time they got to release they were crappy because of the changes that the developers were forced to make (usually due to technical limitations) during the course of alpha and beta.

I think if Intrepid were smart, they would realise that the best thing they can do for the game and the community is to expertly manage the communities expectations. If they fail to manage the communities expectations there will inevitably be a backlash at some stage when the game does not meet some of the communities expectations. I have seen this happen time and time again.

  • I am most looking forward to the crafting planning on having a free holding with my guild
  • I looooove PvP so sure I hype the combat system, because it looks like real fun. :)

Combat for sure needs to be fun, but I would have been happy with the "old" iteration they showed at Pax. (new stuff looks too MOBA for me)  Like others have posted here, it's more the complete package I'm excited about like housing and crafting and social organizations. So, no, you are not alone.
  • It does need some polishing, but Intrepid Studios knows this. They have stated that this is something they need to get right, and it's something that they are going to put a lot of effort and time into. We have only been shown Alpha combat, so there is a lot of room for change.
  • So far it looks very much what I was expecting the UE4 engine to provide. I am very much looking forward to getting stuck in and experiencing it for real. The final system will be a hybrid so its going to be interesting in what direction the community push this. After all it is us that will give Intrepid the feedback and have a large influence in how the combat system works.

  • I like the combat - sure, it's not finish, but it's ok. Are you the only one with other main reasons for this MMORPG? Nope, as you can see. & I gonna queue up for other reasons, too.

Honestly I'm all for the loot. I love farming - and rare loot. I'm a collector and a merchant.
  • Combat is the means to an end.  Exploration, advancement, building up a node, crafting, making my way through stories.  Those are what I look forward to and combat is just something that happens along the way.

It better be enjoyable because I expect to do a lot of it, but it’s not the end-all, be-all of the game for me.
  • It looks great, but I'm more of a lore person so I want to see the world of Verra and the whole backstory etc.

I love PvP but I am not all that interested in combat.

I hope the current combat gets polished.  Character movement seems a little jagged in and out of combat.  Is my toon going to be doing involuntary somersaults every time he fights a mob?  How about back flips?  Suppose I am a sniper hiding on a ledge and picking people off.  Is my toon going to somersault off a cliff and drop dead from the fall between bow shots?  How about a triple axel while spraying hot lead into everybody around me?  After all he will be blinded by all the bright lights and off-balance from all the earth shaking.

If the combat gets polished it will be really nice.  However, I am just as interested in crafting, harvesting, trade, exploring, questing, building, and lore as I am in combat.  Hopefully some aspects of the game will require intelligence to solve puzzles instead of just shooting up a place.
  • I love PvP but I am not all that interested in combat.
Maybe they’ll have dance-offs, cooking  competitions, and fashion shows then.
  • You are not the only one.
The players seem to flow like leaves in a river of combat.
I hope that this isnt the finished stage.
I hope for less movement while fighting, and a bigger sense of impact when hitting your target.
Those legs dance around too much just like CS 1.6
  •  Comes leaps and bounds in my opinion from four months ago. Solidified my Love for developers that work from a passion point of view. Sure there’s a ton of work left. I think you have to view development team by what they have or have not done.
  • I want to be a fisherman

I agree with this wholeheartedly!  For me, combat is a means to an end.  A way to farm my mats, finish my quest, or protect my caravan/node.  My girlfriend and I tend to play games for years at a time, so we really like having lots of stuff to do.

I really hope trying to balance all the multiple different combat options (pvp, pve, tab target, action) doesn't overwhelm IS.  Most games have trouble just trying to balance classes/gear for pvp vs pve.  This will be much harder due to the extra options.

I also worry that all the focus on combat could take away from some of the other awesome systems that have been talked about.  Crafting sounds SOOO good so far, and I'm really wanting to try it!  But crafting seems to be the first thing cut when development budgets/timelines run out, so I'm trying not to get too excited yet.

My girlfriend will be looking at housing, farming (husbandry?), cosmetics, fishing - all the 'quality of life' stuff.  She really likes 'playable instruments' like LoTRo and Shroud of the Avatar have, but I don't think they've been included in AoC ?

The combat is fine, I just don't know how it will work with hostile monsters (are they going to dance around and roll around as much as fighting players?) The other thing is the numbers. Exactly where are these numbers (damage and to-hit number) generated from? I come from a d&d background and every single swing calculates a precise hit or miss and damage dealt. But I understand this is not dungeons and dragons. So as long as it has a system for deep character immersion, I'm a happy camper.
  • For a 1st pass alpha test the combat is acceptable.
I am personally passing on testing however as i don't enjoy it in it's current iteration.
My oceanic ping makes abilities an skills non intuitive with severe input lag. 1sec delay dodge roll etc.
the TTK is to low for me.
Not a fan of the fixed over shoulder locked perspective. aware of camera customisation in future.
Not sure how i feel about head shot hitboxes from a long term MMO perspective in regards to both PVP and PVE content (mob AI), general balance.

Noticing a heavy reliance on cleave/slash/AOE already...can have a negative spammy shallow feeling.

Great for casual battle royal, long way to got for long term MMORPG longevity.

Basically agree with the OP. I'll will wait and see what the hybrid system actually is before any I have remote chance of 'hype'

  • Just remember how far they came from the first stuff they showed us. I agree it looks a bit too idk like fps like? I do want ability aiming and such but idk. I wouldn't know how to make it better haha
