Timeline concern/question

Okay so really quick, according to the time line I see and what Steven has said it goes in this order,
Alpha 1.
Alpha 2 begins in 3rd quarter of 2019
Beta 1 begins after alpha 2? so fourth quarter(speculation)
Beta 2 also begins fourth quarter?

So my question is this is seems alpha 2 will last 4 months where alpha one is lasting 8 or more? and then Beta 1 and 2 are 2 months each? approx?
According to Steven the release of the game is the end of 2019 so i'm guessing December 31 2019.
My question is they are going to be able to fill in the beta testing (both phases) in the last quarter of 2019. Is that normal for a studio to do that?
Love the game so far btw, just thought about it now and wanted to know other games timelines compared to this when it came to beta testing.

  • I think betas will be few days only, maybe just a weekend event even. Yes it's normal for betas to be quite short.
  • Hello @Sgtfire !

Good question! Let me get rid of your worries.
    • Alpha 1 Phase 1 will last 7 months (until March 2019)
    • Alpha 1 Phase 2 will take place in Q2 2019
    • Alpha 2 will take place in Q3 2019
    • Beta 1 and Beta 2 will take place most likely in Q4 2019, if not already in Q3 2019
It was said that the beta phases will be very short tests, mostly to find bugs with a lot of players and to fix those bugs.
These phases are not intended for long testing!

    So yeah, it will fit!

As regarding as if it is normal for a studio: certainly not.
Most alpha and beta phases are promotional phases, whereas this tests are real tests!
  • People have gotten used to seeing "early access" games which are essentially a late alpha or early beta. Ashes took a more traditional approach and actually has testing phases. Alphas are usually longer and tend to work out technical and mechanical short comings or test game systems in place. While betas generally are used on what is essentially a finished game with a heavier server load and larger population to try and find remaining bugs so they tend to be shorter.

Typically alphas are invite only and under NDA so your average gamer won't see many alpha tests.
  • Betas should start before the end of Alpha 2 as Alpha 2 persists all the way to launch. So you will see beta 1 and beta 2 running in parallel to Alpha 2. Maybe on different builds and testing different things though at the same time.
  • Beta's are more fine-tuning rather than hardcore testing with a lot of bugs so I'd say the beta's wont last very long

This is the perfect way to show players that they test their content before release.
Unlike many p2w games at the monent.
  • I think people are upset at the short beta tests due to the majority of people having only beta keys. But even so with both beta testings only being around 4 months together means the game will be released real soon.
