I noticed the lack of a Druid achetype pretty quickly, but I had totally missed that the monk was missing. Both feel a bit like odd omissions, but adding more classes would make the combination number huge. I could see them potentially as specific combinations. I don't think it would be too hard to get Druid out of Ranger/Cleric, for example.

It's also possible that they were left out for lore reasons. Druids are often said to have a connection to the land, and if we've been offworld for a long time while it was recovering from corruption, it would make some sense that that connection doesn't exist yet. Similarly with Monks, that fighting style is typically only prevalent in certain areas or cultures, it's possible it doesn't exist in these cultures, or that the people who practice it aren't comfortable falling into an untamed world full of unknown.

Hmmm ... Monks(esp. friars) are not often found in fantasy rpgs(not in MMO)- mb only in classical type rpgs(isometric mostly) - but they are iconic characters.

Mb. cuz he is rather complex character(maybe most complex character from iconic classes) ; monks are very disciplined warriors, they are kinda clerics, they are brawlers and acrobats, they are kinda mages, who uses some energy(ki-chi;seems like fantasy version of jedhi)to perform certain "spell" and they are kinda controllers(mellee range).
In this dualistic system very hard to implement monk class( in triple-arch. maybe "aka - cleric-tank-mage" or "cleric-fighter-mage" etc.).

Of course im not count games where monks are ususal DDealer(mostly) in leather armor.
  • I personally don't find it to odd these types of classes are not in the game. Typically Monks and Druids are labeled to be touch with the inner-self and world around them. Adventuring to a new world doesn't really seem to fit that archetypes as it would take them from their spiritual locations and deities. While they are keen to protect what's theirs, making a new home doesn't really fit the class.
After giving it some thought, this seems to be a quite good explanation!
It also wouldn't stand in the way of adding druid/monk in later expansions, imagine the Server is open for more than a year, one could argue that is enough time to open new paths for Verra's population. I'm thinking about classes as druid but also some kind of environmental/nature magic, that (at least in my mind) belongs right in the druids wheelhouse.

Also I gave the new classes some thought and have to agree that 64 is already plenty, adding 1 more would bring us to 81 (as a lot of you have stated), which would be flat out overwhelming. So what about adding is as a sub archetype only?
If you consider a new sub-class only, that would circle around the theme of "touching the inner-self and world around", you could bring in monks, druids and 6 other options, bringing us to a total of 72 classes. Still a lot, but in my mind this is far more manageable

Just picture it, throwing 1 more archetype in there bumps it from 64 to 81 classes, 2 archetypes bumpt it to 100 classes. Exponential growth ftw
Technically it’s polynomial growth, not exponential.
  • Where is my exclusive class the God class ?
You don’t need a dog class, just roll a Tulnar.
  • I loved monks in World of Warcraft and would like to see something similiar here :)
  • I brought up the question as to why a monk wasn't on there in one of the SimCasts several episodes back. I was surprised it was not on there anywhere either. It, to me, would make sense in more then one area (instead of others on the list).

  • Dang..no druid means I wont be moving over here. Shame too the game is looking good.
  • If you take Monk as its interpretation from RPGs like D&D then yes, it's an Eastern culture based class.

Maybe AoC has NPC monks, and they're based on what the vast majority of monks in the East and West were historically - scholars and ascetics, not martial artists. Maybe none of the interpretations of monk fit in the AoC lore. Maybe we'll look at one class at release and go "that's a monk!", but it's name fits AoC lore. *shrug*
  • @Krojak also, keep up the cool vids!
  • Where is my exclusive class the God class ?
I heard the God class can dual wield 2 other classes, like another player in each hand, and gets all their abilities
  • It's cool to see so many people's different interpretations of a monk! Hopefully, as time goes by and we learn more about the skills and customization, druid-like and monk-like classes show up.

It would be cool if, within the 64 class subsets, there could be 3 or 4 different monk-like ways to customize your character depending on  your interpretation. IMO, that would be much better than being pigeonholed into one idea of what a monk should be.

Pretty lame for a god to be honest...

Would you really rather have omnipotence or something near it? Wouldn't the lack of challenge in doing anything make it boring?
  • This game has it's own lore. I don't see why we should have same classes that other games have had. Nothing against that option if they would include them though.

Personally I'm already excited about all those options we're getting with this game.
If they would include monk I'd like to see at least Jade Empire level array of moves and that would propably take bit more work than other classes that mostly swing or cast.

Yes. That's the whole point of being one.
  • I usually get on board with the "more content = better" club, but I don't think they should add any more classes right now. Class balance in other games is always a huge issue and that generally comes with 5-10 classes. We now have 64 classes. I don't see how they will be able to keep everything balanced, but I look forward to it. Should be a ton of fun.
  • I just want to play a Warrior class with dual swords. This is my favourite class in MMORPGs.

I do love dual wielding sword, but I would like to see daggers in the off hand and a sword in the main hand. It may be weaker than a shield but you may have a parry chance, e.g. dodge.

I think rapiers were used in such a way irl where a dagger was wielded in the other hand :>
