What does everyone think of spies?

Those people who join your guild in order to leak information.

Do you think of it objectively as just another meta tactic, a line never to be crossed because of the trust and friendship it potentially damages, or something in-between?

Personally, I find it extremely distasteful but also know players invest different levels of emotion to MMOs so would like to know what others think.

Comments

  • Perfectly fine with them. Makes it all the more interesting. Also spies get all the girls
  • Valid tactic endorsed by the Great Sandal God himself. Will be an option for those that want to play that way.
  • Not only allowed, but highly encouraged.

I don't like the idea, but I accept the concept.
  • Yeah totally love this in MMORPGs. Last i remember this being done was in Lineage 2.Was probably done in Archeage aswell.
  • I love the idea it really makes the game feel alive
  • I don't understand what you could possibly learn.
Oh this guild is doing this on Saturday lets go ruin it for them.
People who do that need to die IRL.
if you waste your time spying on a guild instead of enjoying the game, just don't play.
It's more than that. If a spy gets high enough in the ranks, you may have information on other guilds which you can then share and start a war between the two guilds and when they are weakened you swoop in and claim everything ^^

Caravans, castle sieges etc. Though I'm not sure of their mechanics I think spying will be inevitable (even if it's not my cup of tea). It will add to the intrigue of the game and counter measures can always be put in place

  • I can not imagine giving the time an effort to do such a thing that would not be fun to me but if some enjoys it, more power to them.
  • Just read everything about it and i cant help it but feel astounded by what some games evolve into. He wasnt a planted spy from the begining but was an act of desperation towards the leader and some people there. EVEN Online has the best stories, sadly i didnt start this game when i should of have.
  • As long as consequences exist I like the idea of spies. If your a terrible guild members, you should be able to get kicked and have the guild go to war with you, not your guild, you.

The only monkey in the wrench might be if they are a citizen of the same node. I don’t believe you can attack someone who is a citizen from the same node you are apart of.
  • i once spent 3 months in an enemy guild in a mobile game and had my guild conquer them entirely based on their troop movements. And then my guild attacked me cuz i stayed too long ...
  • Don't need to be in a guild to leak caravan info.
Hmmn. Now I have to contemplate the differences between leaks and spying.
  • spying is the sign and symptom of a healthy game for guild activity... and good game design for guilds competition.

    Their is the info-stealing spy

    and

their is the spy who joins to poach your guild members

and then their are the pro spy thieves ... who join to gut your guild storage!
  • Perfectly fine with it, some people are really into that sort of spy/assassin/rouge roleplay :3

Considering the nature of the game, the competition for resources and nodes,  spies are to be expected.

  • One lesson Ive learnt in life is wherever there are human beings involved , then there is going to be all sorts of these types of activities.

Thats why the elves left Middle earth.

    right on the money ^^
  • I think it will be a thing.
  • In terms of rules I see follow the real world ones. Thus I do find it interesting and more exciting while at the same time I would not like or respect such people much. However if it's their job or they were ordered to do it then I can understand reasons behind it etc...Overall I think it is normal, we always have spies in everyday life so..why not in the game and guilds. Makes it pretty interesting on top of which...you can always get a squad together and PK those spies somewhere ahem in a dark ahem alley ahem.

p.s. if you ever get to PK someone like that just let me wwwwaaaaatch!! lol :D

I believe you can attack and flag someone of the same node as you, probably not in the instance of a node war but in the open world you can. Considering that guilds, even if they are part of the same node, may not actually get along or agree with everything that is happening. Not to mention there are guild vs guild wars as well. Though a good thought, good question to research more as I am not 100%.

Pretty sure citizens of the same Node cannot attack each other.
Same for people in the same party, guild or alliance.

Castle sieges probably suspend the same Node restriction.
  • What about spies using long range spells and or magic items to spy so that they are nowhere in sight?

People of the same node can definitely attack and flag each other. Just got confirmation.

Steven confirmed this?  Citizens can flag other same node citizens?

Mods confirmed this in the PI channel on Discord and I recall it being discussed before. Members/Citizens of a node are not automatically made into an alliance as confrontation can still occur with the citizens of the same node.
