Look at games like Bless for example. They pinned there NA/EU release on there active combat system without really having the pattern down. They let it consume too much of there redevelopment time, and allowed .ini file alterations, and straight up packet interception hacking which provided for endless issues in game. Not to mention releasing a game with less than 1/4 the content that exiested in other regions at launch.
Now I understand that Bless was/is a failure, but you can look at most every MMORPG that tries to release with a "active combat system" and see that more or less most rarely get to even 1/8th the population of a pre-WoW era MMORPG.
In the end I think there willingness to allow both to exist is good. However, I hope that niether takes away from time they need to develop: lore/story, quest continuity, and unified world mechanics.
I wish fights to be combo based instead of having a target and facerolling the keyboard.
Im interested in seeing a hybrid system but I have my fears.
