What kind of mount philosophy would you like in the game?
We already know that different mount types will have different special niches. We do not know how impactful these will be though.
I would personaly like to see each mount being specialized in different roles that has a medium impact on how we use them.
A speculative example of this niches could be that a wolf has higher sprint speed, a horse has better stamina, an elefant has better carry weight and a turtle has a lower chance of dismounting you in combat.
This would ultimatle make mounts and breeding matter more. It would also be more fun and immersive since a turtle that can run as fast as a horse is a bit weird. Also, this would make your mouting decision in the world be more interesting. It would add to mount variaty in the world as well since people all have different ideologies of what is better. Finaly it would also change the way you ride. A mammoth may easily be able to run right through a dangerous area full of mobs while a horse may be more effective for speedy, longer journeys.
What would you like to see in regards to mounts?
(Nagash, you don't need to answear. I already know that your infinite stamina, spectral undead beasts is the way to go for you)

I think in order to make this be as dynamic and actually have "tactical choice" around it as you suggest, there needs to be a good ui for mounts and selecting mounts. Given our restrictions with fast travel, weight limits etc, we would need to be able to "carry" multiple mounts and easily choose which one to use at a given time. Otherwise, making niche mounts that you can only realistically carry one becomes a false sense of choice and practically will lead people to carry 1 favorite mount.
The chances of that happening are fairly good though I'd say. One of the main reasons they have stated for not having PvE and PvP gear is that if you are traveling the world and happen upon a caravan, they don't want you to think "oh I wish I had my PvP gear" or to make you feel like you need to carry around different sets of gear just to be effective in interacting with all the world as to offer. So if they do decide to make mounts niche and their choice tactical, then I feel confident there would be some weightless and clean ui for choosing different mounts maybe with some "swap-out" mechanic that takes longer or something like that.
@nagash It would be pretty interesting if undead mounts would then have unending stamina, but nearly no health. xD
I don't want players to be able to breed mounts to create more, unless the combinations are finite, if there are infinite mounts and mount variations, then none will feel special and players wont get to enjoy the feeling of collecting every mount.
Mounts with bag space is fine.
They shouldn't just appear and disappear, when you call for it, it should run up from behind into view and run away when dismounted.
i agree with you on the first and and last points completely, and i can understand that infinite varieties can take away some uniqueness from something, and of course the mixing of certain types can be far fetched even for fantasy game, like a mammoth and a horse breeding....... but breeding to create the mount you want(within type of course ie horse or griffin) sounds like something that is already planned (http://aocwiki.net/Mounts) and breeding a mount with the best stats in that type will probably happen as well, which i think is fine because we already do that today.(just dont kill your mounts because you dont like its stats, thats fucked up)
Didnt they once say that there will be a artisan class, that can breed mounts?
*Edit:
https://aocwiki.net/Mounts
- Land Mounts will first be obtained through an early quest that is present for players within the starting areas.
- Breeding
- Taming
- Mounts may be purchased from ther players
"Some mounts will have abilities specific to that mount. Some might have combat applications."While everyone has different mounts they all could apply the same skin.
Unlikely but possible.
Animal husbandry and taming create unique mounts with unique abilities and stats.
- Speed.
- Health.
- Armor.
- Energy.
And you will be able to modify the appearance as well.We hope.
Yeah the "everyone" was a bit unrealistic now that i read it again.
But still there could be big guilds where everyone uses the same mount skin.
Or upon release of a new "cool" mount skin there will be probably tons of people having this new skin.
My recommendation? Make mounts capturable. Make a live stable environment for people to look back on their accomplishments, but also make beasts and riders area-specific. Have lizards that climb mountainous terrain and cliffs be in a desert are so if players in your basic hometown want to strut their stuff, they'll capture beasts from each region and be able to look at their work and feel accomplished. Add some cool color designs that can only be obtained by breeding certain strains with others as well as some skills, and voila~. Maybe also some siege mounts, elephants/rhinos etc. That's something I think would get people excited and make some interesting breeding mechanics, I think quite a few of us are just excited for 'breeding' to be a good way to make money and be a good pass time as well.
I have always felt it a little odd that I can carry a horse, donkey, and other mounts in my backpack. It seems unrealistic.
What if you could build a pasture and a barn on your freehold and use them to house your animals, whether you are breeding them or not. When you go on a journey, whether to town with a load of iron ore or into the wilderness to hunt wargs, you choose which of your mounts you want to take and leave the others at home. A town could have a public pasture for citizens.
Perhaps you could ride one and lead another, but not have a backpack full of grown animals to pull out and inflate at any time.
True, @AutumnLeaf (which is a particularly beautiful name, btw), but we are also used to instant travel, warehouses accessible from anywhere in the world, and lots of other 'unrealistic' game mechanics.
But I realize the lack of logic in my argument, when I want realism in a fantasy world!
Also the name will die when we get the name change option 'w'
This x2. This has some really amazing potential for insane gameplay tactics and mechanics.
I don't mind the breeding, but like I mentioned I hope there are only a certain number of variations and the rare combinations are what separate the good breeders from the bad,
