Display Settings- help!

Hey, I'm new. I haven't been able to play yet.
Because - When I open the game, the display settings are off. They are so off I can't click the button in game to change the display settings. Even changing my display settings on the computer itself does nothing for the in-game settings, whether or not I close and reopen the game each time I change a setting.
Please help? I want to play, as a friend of mine likes this game, but I literally cant even push the play button because of the display settings
Any advice?
