Thoughts on mobile guild housing

Hello there everybody,

I was watching a lot of reaction videos from big streamers in regards to this game and its development and I have to say, that this has been such a game that I have been waiting for, for a long time.

As a Lineage 2 veteran myself and loving that game as it was one I grew up with, seeing this is hyping me up to the maximum, seeing how it compares to a lot of what Lineage 2 itself had done really well.

After listening trough the Asmongold interview regarding the game, some questions came up for me, which were not covered but seemed like an idea for something fun, however difficult to implement or actually realize in a game it may be, at least in my opinion.

That would be the idea of a mobile housing system or mobile guild houses. Specifically Airships or standard ships or galleons which would not only double as a military vessel but also as a guild house.

Imagine being a pirate mercenary guild living off of your own guild ship and voyaging trough the seas taking on different challenges, pillaging or providing naval support when attacking a specific node or region. Same goes for the strategic use of an Airship if such were thought out in this game universe.

This is just an idea I wanted to share and possibly hear from other people as to what the validity or implementation of such a thing might be, or if there are simply other people who think that this might be a cool thing.

There would be little risk/reward in such a mechanic. It would be difficult to siege an Airship with limited flight capabilities and no mounted combat.

A mobile ship could be an option but you'd have no access to the caravan system so functionality would be limited.

In theory the ideas are good but in practice I don't think they can fit into Verra. Perhaps an expansion might change this in the future though. I'm not sure.

  • Yes, I agree. It makes sense that the Airship idea would be very limited due to no mounted combat unless the airship itself is docked or stationary on the ground.

Wouldn't the caravan system for a mobile ship out on the seas work however if the caravan system works between nodes out at sea and on islands with nodes and townships on the mainland?

I believe that if a ship or guild owning a ship "home" is affiliated with a specific mainland or perhaps island node, the temporary docking for the period of a siege might also be a variant of the lockout system for not moving stuff out of storage and such for standard housing, making the ship itself vulnerable for attack.

A caravan system using ships as caravans is something I thought might be possible, making this option and general naval combat a bit more common i believe.

There are Naval Caravans (Trade Ships) but I'm not sure the system would be robust enough to follow a mobile Ship in order to trade. Trade Ships can be attacked. In terms of Harbours, I believe Harbours are safer areas for ships rather than open sea. It is unlikely a ship would be attacked at a Harbour because you would be unloading and loading cargo in a non-siege environment. I believe Trade Ships can be struck in open water. I'm not too clued up on Naval Trade as I've not seen it in action.

I would assume there will be trade between islands but I can't confirm if it is the case. My lack of knowledge on the Naval Aspects prevents an in-depth analysis by me.

There is no fast travel (Unless you count Science Metropolis) so catching an Airship on the ground would be a difficult challenge. I don't believe it wouldn't happen but I think it would be a difficult experience. In terms of balance it would be difficult to achieve.

Well in regards to the system not being robust enough to follow a mobile ship in order to trade or pillage or whatever, in case of piracy for example, wouldn't it make sense for the pirating party to be able to disable and board said trade ship?

That * would definitely be a fun thing to do while out on the seas, if said trade ship has gathered other players for protection. It offers another different view on combat as well, aside from the standard land caravan attacks and so on, doesn't it?

I imagine Naval Combat will be quite in-depth. Much like ambushers of a Trade Caravan, fleets will meet other fleets (Guild Fleets?) but Naval Combat is difficult to produce and so far Intrepid have been developing it in secret. When we get first glimpses of Naval Combat, bugs will be present, but testers will report issues and issues will be patched like all aspects of the game.

  • I appreciate you talking to me about this, i'm hyped when I can talk to people about these things, especially for the type of game like Ashes of Creation is turning out to be.

Steven (Intrepid CEO) was also an avid gamer and is developing Ashes with a lot of passion. We're all going through a learning curve, including Steven, but the game looks promising. It is important not to hype any game too much because few games can live up to hype. Just learn what you can and make your own conclusions ;)
