Campaign Quests and Pathing

I understand there are multiple quest types in the narrative category (story arcs, story line quests, and epic/legendary), but I wanted to zone-in and ask something specific about these that maybe I missed or couldn't find with a google search.

Will the "basic" story quests, assuming that there are basic story quests (maybe "story line quests"?), take you across the map?
If so, I am completely against them doing that and before people rave against me, let me explain.

I think the only quests that should take you across the map in /one/ quest should be epic/legendary.
Basic story quests should lead you to the lake, but not ask you to go across it; let the crossing be the higher-tier quests.
The reason behind this is, in a world with minimal fast-travel, you force players to decide between: staying local for friends/instances/etc. or a quest-line. I don't think that's a fun experience.

I'm on call 24/7 with my job and it sucks to log out and log in to an unfamiliar place, only to realize that you need to walk for 30mins to get back to civilization. I've had to do this with BDO, though I think they have a system that I don't mind too terribly due to how quick the segments of the story line are. If Ashes has quests that take you across the map, then it should be similar to BDO where there are "checkpoint" quests that you complete to finish a full line and rewards after each, to keep you going.

GW2 did something similar as well with their original legendary weapon line. It was very segmented. You could go grind out completion in a few areas, go to work or do a boss, and not dread going back to finish-up or worry about forgetting where you are.

If this was already explained, I apologize; I'm just trying to bring up concerns to help and answer my own question in the process.
Thank you!

  • 'Well, you are doing it this way, and I think you are wrong because I think you should do it this way." - we gotem ladies and gentlemen...

I don't see why a quest should be doable in a timeframe that you are specifically okay with. I am personally fine with quests that take you around the map and give you rewards. Doesn't need to be epic/legendary/cosmic level quest. All it needs to have is a nice story and a nice reward at the end. I am assuming that they will apply their logic for selling goods to quests - the more you have to do and the more you have to travel, the bigger the reward.

I think the answer, OP, is that we really don't know yet. I wouldnt mind crossing the map for basic local quests. In some cases I would prefer quests to not be obvious things the NPC could just go do. That's why I am an adventurer and they are not.

I too am a casual gamer with little time. However, we can't all get what we want out of a single game.

I hope there are plenty of quests that work for you and your time. I would prefer them all (at any given tier) to not function that way.

  • I would also expect that if your focus will be on a small locality, you will still need to travel a fair amount to fullfill your needs towards progress, gear, levels, professions, etc... But you’ll be pursuing a majority of quests that won’t take you too far. And that won’t necessarily take you across the map. But maybe across a few nodes.

Whereas, if you want to go broader, go for power, the risk will be greater but so will the distance. And so will those quests.
