Combat system experiences and ideas

I like what you are doing here.
I sunk thousands of hours into Lineage2 and it brings so many memories when I'm looking at AOC. Basically I'm playing it on and off since 2003 to this day.
First successor of Lineage2 was suppose to be TERA, when the main group of developers that were working on Lineage3 split away from NCSoft and created Bluehole studios.
Yes, I sunk thousands of hours there too since the open closed beta in 2012.
It was very pretty for the time. But they did many mistakes.
One thing they nailed was the hybrid combat system.
It was kind of hybrid action combat with tab targeting that you are trying to achieve.
But instead of clunky mouse cursor toggling they went down the road of hovering over the target to select a target for tab targeting skill.
This made the combat feel very fluid even if it wasn't pure action combat.
I would love to see something like this to be considered for AOC as well.
Please give it a thought.

And thank you for being so open and transparent, we needed a company like yours to come and release the corporate chains that gripped mmorpg world for too long.
I'm looking forward to sink thousands of hours to AOC as well.

  • I haven't played any of the games you mentioned but to me a combat system that executed both tab and action perfectly was Wildstar. I thought the combat in Wildstar was amazing both as a melee and a caster. I hope they look into it and possibly copy it. I think because the game shut down it doesn't mean we should let such great system die.

Wildstar's Telegraph System was horrid. Other than that the Raids and Combat were good. Yet, I wouldn't want the telegraph system to be reborn.

Personally, I think ESO got hybrid combat the best. The speed and APM (kek) in that game is unparalleled.

That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die.

I don't know if ESO did it the best but they got a lot of things right imho which is why I stayed with it for so long. Now class balance was another matter entirely which is why I am not playing it atm.

I'd rather avoid animation cancelling and horrid carpal tunnel, personally.
  • Assassins creed was nice
  • Eso has a good combo in my opinion, but for me, the weakest aspect of ESO's combat is the animation clipping.

ESO's combat in terms of active blocking, dodging and sprinting really works well for me. Even as a magic character.

Really opened up alot of control and positioning I could do.

Problems with eso's combat is the clipping as @halbarz said

And heres a couple other issues
-lack of magic weapons for melee magic players
-cc's break free tied only to stamina resource (huge disadvantage for magic)
    -spastic gameplay with button mashing
-bad server/client side character positioning making lag delays/skill delays/dysyncs

If AoC could incorporate a little bit more active control like blocking but maybe not dodging since that will be its own stat or active ability I think? Then it would he nice
  • The combat system in Tera was indeed smooth and you felt that your hits had impact when you knocked someone down or were being knocked down. I also recall the charge move with the tank where you did this sprint and every mob/person on your way was pushed back. Out of all the mmo's I've played, Tera nailed the combat. I would absolutely love it if AoC would go down that route with their combat as well. For me tab targeting is too stale and boring. It's also just weird that you can hit something in tab-targeting systems without even having to look at your selected target. If you want immersion, action combat is the way to go ;)

Curious about the hybrid system they are going for. You could choose your combat style, right? Chances are I will likely go 90% action and 10% tab (100% action -0% tab if possible). Guess we'll have to await further testing to give us more insight in AoC's combat.
