Gathering: did I miss something?

I haven't been following the game too closely for a year but last I recall, gathering resources was supposed to be based on visuals and you had some generic gather ability that you learned through trial and error what you can pick up and what you can't. I was watching some of the most recent live streams though and I see plants with glowing sparkles all over the place... did I miss some change in design? Or once you learn something is gather-able does it just sparkle? If anyone could clarify/catch me up I'd appreciate it.

When I saw that at pax, I thought it was really clever but it looks like it's gone now.
But it could have been an interesting system.

So I watched it and I feel like "more into depth" is a bit misleading haha. There was no new piece of information about how the system is set up or if there were any changes from when I followed it closely a year ago. I guess that's a question for a future Q&A, I hope they stick to what they had originally planned, I thought that was cool and would reward players who made artisanship a high priority.
I honestly don't think it would be overkill to remove those effects and hide the interaction ("E") button, and let players learn via trial and error. I could be wrong though, maybe they have player data to support this current design.
Other than them having changed their design philosophy with gathering, the only thing I can think of is that this is one of the "types" of gatherables they discussed and others may not sparkle but that seems unlikely because they listed 3: single instance resources, large vein resources and moving resources... large vein is likely to be obvious (e.g. mines) and moving sounds like animal herds so I'm not sure.
Master Assassin
(Yes same Tyrantor from Shadowbane)
Book suggestions:
Galaxy Outlaws books 1-16.5, Metagamer Chronicles, The Land litrpg series, Ready Player One, Zen in the Martial Arts
