gathering materials

hopefulling gathering materials will be quite simple and easy and realistic.

We can use any weapon to hack at a tree no matter what and eventually it'll go down. depending on the weapon of course.
Also thinking about the different magic types then will be introduced into the game there will probably be some type of magic that will strike in a slashing or cleaving strike such as "wind blade" or something like the such. I hope they allow spells to be able to use to gather resources as well. Thinking of it in a fantasy world it makes sense that magic users would use their full aray of abilities to gather material. Such as using earth type magic to mine or using fireball or some fire type to blow open the side of a mountain to mine or just clear an area for base creation

  • What's wrong with having a simple axe animation to cut down a tree? Having an axe in your inventory?
Who would willingly sacrifice and dull their weapon on a tree when there are tools to cut it down?

Just trying to understand what's good or realistic about it. Because right now I don't get it.
  • Im not saying that is isnt good. Im just saying that I only being able to harvest things with tools would make this game kinda like others witch isnt a bad thing. But i would't like to spend a long time cutting down trees just to make a clearing. Im just saying it would be kinda cool if you build like a pure strength character and use a two handed weapon to cleave down an entire forest. Or use mage's abilities to build a mine shaft or something similar
  • Historically speaking, the axe was and still is, better at cutting down trees because of its weights distribution. Same goes of pickaxe for stone working and so on. Nothing has advanced since then. And no one wants to use their precious sword on a tree or even a stone! Unless you hate it and don't want to cut your enemies with it..

Tho, I like the idea of magical beings be able to summon magical tools... Just because ... fantasy and magic. So why not.
  • I believe fruitporn is trying to say, something like, example, mages in addition to using an axe to chop down trees, can also choose to use their wind magic to make nice sharp blade/tempest of wind to cut down trees, or maybe a bolt of lightning/gust of wind to catch fishes, strike down trees, etc.

I believe it would be pretty interesting and a nice fun departure from the common "Axe onry for trees, pickaxe onry for ores" etc.
  • It would have to be a craftable axe that would not be tradable to anyone and would need regular sharpening to be effective
  • Tbh, I think that using an axe would be much quicker, but It would be nice to get some of the jobs done using the characters skills alone! Maybe the mage could lift a few trees up and make the job be completed easier.
  • i think that the idea of having an axe or a pickaxe in inventory is normal, and good too, but well in the real world you don´t go around exploring the world with an axe or a pickaxe, the idea o rougly hit a tree with a sword or a mace, to takedown, isn´t out of this world, and as a possible fact, the idea of using magic, or crafting to get goods in areas, isn´t bad, not because it coul be faster, but actually it could be more interesting for the players to experiment different things, and to try to tet out thoings out of the box :D
  • Personally I don't mind the mechanic of being able to cut something down with your weapon or tools, though personally I wouldn't since I would think that would dull my weapon and lessening it's ability to kill. I can also agree with the magic aspect of being able to use one of the spells listed above to cut down a tree, break a rock, etc.. I would still think that a tool meant for a specific job would do better, but I don't think using a blade of some sort or your weapon wouldn't be out of the ordinary especially if there is something blocking your path and all your have is your weapon, or magic.
  • It's probably going to be a semi-simplistic gathering system. Equip compatible gathering tool (axe, pickaxe etc.) and left click. I believe it won't be limited by anything like energy points, but more by amount of raw resources. We know that resources will shift and be depleted. I believe the example used was a mithril vein. If found it could be harvested and eventually depleted. The mined ore could be sold of to a town far away with no mithril vein in the area, thus creating demand.

Given that the world is dynamic, you will probably have to move a lot to find the best minerals and constantly stay up to date on areas of interest. I believe this adds more realism to the game.

As for the actual equipping of tools, I hope that they make it simple. For example in stead of having 8 axes in your bag, ready to switch on depletion, have a tool-belt that doesn't take up inventory space (or just one inventory slot). From there add the option to upgrade the tools to higher tier. The tools would need some sort of durability to increase demand for tools (if the developers wishes to go that route). You could for example take 6 axes and combine them into 1 axe with the durability of 6 axes of that tier. It would lessen the need for constantly filling your inventory with tools should you happen to come across a good spot during your adventures. It also keeps demand for tools high to profit crafters.

We know that there will be weight limit. This makes gathering a bit harder, as you will need to constantly deposit your materials due to weight. Hopefully this won't feel to forced, where you only gather for a short time before going back to town. I think 2 or 3 hours before you have to bank the items would be just fine. It's not extremely short, but it's not that long either. It would be a pain to mine for 30 minutes then walk a long distance just to bank.

Alternatively they could add a minigame to gathering. For example when gathering ore you would get up an ore and then choose where to aim your pickaxe. From there depending on where you hit and how often you hit the same spot, ore is gathered. The simplest I can think of is an image of an ore (3d, with your character showing or first person) and spots on the ore with the actual mineral. For example gold spots with stone texture making up for most of the ore. If you hit the gold spots (they move after each hit) you'll gather more material (in this example gold). If you just hit the ore you'll gather less materials. Not sure if something like this is desirable for everyone, but I like things like this.

I like the idea of being able to utilize Magic-Abilities for crafting - really neat idea  o:)
