I wonder if any of you guys could illustrate to me how the art passes work and whether or not the second and third passes on these things take significantly reduced time than the first pass. Why I am curious is because for years now we have been hearing that most of what we are shown is first pass.
As development started mid 2017 and these first pass assets are mostly on art and animations they shouldn’t have been hit at all or nowhere nearly as hard by the network, architecture, and infrastructure delays and reworks. This means that it’s been almost 3.5 years and the first pass is still not gone full circle.
I am at this point getting a bit nervous about it. Mostly because there is still so much we have not yet seen a first pass of. Just to name a couple things that we have not seen a first pass of are naval combat, artisan stuff, or even some races like the orcs and the tulnar.
A couple times has Steven come out and said that almost all of the things we are shown will get a second and third pass but the way they are going about it is that they want to finish the first pass on everything before they move on to the next pass.
So it’s got me thinking that. Either the second and third passes take significantly reduced time compared to the first pass. Or the game is still 7 to 10 years away from release since 3.5 years later the first pass is not done and there are still 2 more passes to go through.

I'd be happy with a notification to the poster that says ²Are you sure a thread with a similar topic isn't active currently", when there are certain keywords within the post.
Regarding the topic:
Second passes tend to be the most work intensive as in a good number of cases, these should be the one that stick within the game. If set up properly, they can utilize the first pass and build upon that, which reduces the workload significantly. It usually only comes to a third or 4th pass, if the second and third one weren't just good enough.
After you have reached the passable state with the 1., 2., 3. or 4. pass, you usually only refine those with little details and adjustments.
Also, you don't know how far they are on the things they haven't shown. Just because they don't show them, doesn't mean the systems/first passes aren't in place yet. Just look at the rogue archetype, we have seen first aspects of it back in the video of 2017. They still haven't shown anything regarding the Rogue yet though. That doesn't mean that there isn't work being down/ a lot of the preperation done for a lot of the features/work within the game.
I would love to take a look at the main thread where this is being talked about and read about it, so if you could link it I would appreciate it.
as for the topic, so you think they are already well underway into the second pass it's just that they aren't showing them?
It's just that I am under the impression that they wouldn't continue with the second pass until they had finished the first and as we have not seen, any indication, nor have they said anything about them having finished the first pass for all assets already.
As for "first pass" - I think this means that the asset may be modified depending on how it fits in with the rest of the world - perhaps the proportions of a piece of armor might look awkward beside other ones, or the colours on a particular weapon look "off" compared to other weapons, maybe there's not enough detail on one asset and it looks awkward alongside another one.
I don't think there's a hard rule about what a first pass/second pass is - some assets might be perfect as they are, others tweaked, and still others might need to be redesigned from the ground up.
