E-Sport like King`s Avatar

Hello guys, what is your opionion of an E-Sport which is like in the Novel of King`s Avatar. If you dont know the Novel, ill give you a short explanation.

There is a League with 20 Teams, each season the last 2 Teams will fall out of the League and new Teams have the chance to compete. At the end of the league the first 8 Teams, will fight for the championsship like first place vs 8, second vs 7, etc.. until just one Team is left as champions.

The matches look like 3 x 1vs1 a Team battle in case of AoC should be 8 vs 8 i think and a battle of 1vs1 with the remaining health left until one team loses 3 people.

I think that this is an intresting concept, expecielly for the spectators.

I know that this is only possible if the combat system is intresting, flexible and you can do alot with skill.

What do you think?

In order to create a proper E-Sport around the game, a lot of condition have to be fulfilled, including targeted balancing, a large playerbase attracted to this aspect, an enjoyable viewer experience, relatability and an inherent competitive design principle throughout this aspect within the game.

It's not as easy as "I've seen it in an anime, i like that anime, let's implement it into the game". An instanced, competitive arena does neither agree with the core concept behind the game nor with the design pillars the game is build around.

The primary draw for a large majority of players isn't the instanced arena system. It's barely even an after-thought.

Trying to suddenly invest severly limited resources towards a feature, that wasn't part of the feature-package that attracted the core audience isn't just feature creep, it's poor game design and a blatant insult to the core audience that have backed the game for the past 3.5 years.

Let them finish the and release the game first, if they see that there is an ability to create a healthy e-sport scene, that makes the game better, then they will probably take it. Till then, they should not waste a single hour of development time, that can be spent making the core product as good as it can be.

As much as I disliked Apocalypse, it would be much more suited to an e-sport environment than Ashes is. This game isn’t set up properly to test player vs player skill in a fair contest. MMORPGs in general aren’t, I think that’s why you never see them in e-sports.

In my experiencing of watching games trying to become e-sports, i've learned it's probably best to just make a good game and if you see a strong interest in people wanting to watch a competitive aspect of the game, then support it.
  • Thank you for your answeres. Warth i totaly understand your viewpoint. I have absolut no clue how hard it is to make an game and for a game to be in E-Sports. I just wanted to talk about how it could look like. I know that the concept of AoC is already full enough and they have a lot to do. I didnt mean for devs to come and discuss this topic with me.

I just read the novel and i thought it is truly intresting, even from the viewpoint as spectator. For me i played a lot of WoW in the past 15 years, but watching a game of pvp from WoW is no fun for me. It feels quite borring. You need a deep game knowledge of every class to see what the pro`s are doing good and where they failed.

We will see, what the future will bring :-)

I think E-Sports itself may be a more crowded market than MMOS. If you are saying AOC should put any time or energy into breaking into a another crowded market, than I think that it would be a very risky move for intrepid.

I would also say that I personally don't think that E-Sports make sense when they are a subsection of a larger game. WOWs arena as a E-Sport was taken seriously for a while, but I have heard many gladiators have quit because WOW balances for PvP last after raids, and mythic+. Why would you play a E-sport where the E-sport is not the primary focus of the DEVs. LOL works well as a E-sport because 5v5 is what the characters are all balanced for. The other game modes may be fun, but they are not the primary consideration when balancing the abilities.

If AOC is extremely successful post-launch, and they are swimming in money. I don't think it would be an awful Idea for them to take a small team of DEVs to the side that love PvP, and use the franchise's name and even some assets to make a stand alone E-Sports game. Right now I just want intrepid to stay focused on making the dream of AOC a reality.

This is my personal feedback, shared to help the game thrive in its niche.
  • Vhaeyne you have a good point there! I havent seen it from that side. Maybe there will develop something totaly different, when the game is out. We will see what the future brings!

I think that it would be better if it would develop into it naturally tbh. I mean look at all those games that were created to cater to the E-Sports crowd (HotS, Valorant, etc). They all tried to force their way into the e-sports niche and didnt really make it.
If there are enough people who play it competetively then it will become a e-sports title. If not, then that is also okay. They just need to make their own tournament as a start tbh.
