After some thinking, yours truly has come to the conclusion that Summoners should ultimately serve two roles:
Either the ability to bolster a party's role-fulfillment be being able to summon a Tank, DPS, or Healer creature
and/or
Serve as another form of creature trainer: Some of your summons should be able to be levelled up and customized. (The ability to customize them is specifically mentioned on the Wiki)
It'd be really cool be able to "animate" a golem-type of project. Gather brains from certain creatures and combine them, gather sinew and muscle mass from legendary creatures, throw em' all in the cooker and be able to train and advance the golem - which can then be summoned from your own little pocket-dimension, at-will.
