Immersive Offline Players

AreiaAreia Member, Alpha Two
edited March 2021 in General Discussion
When a player logs out while as a member of a node their avatar (character) should remain in game and transition to a NPC state going through different immersive tasks around towns, drinking at an inn, chopping firewood, or playing guard for the town. This would introduce a high level of immersion to players because you could see your friends still participating in the world even if they're not online.

What if someone decides to kill my now npc character and loot them ?

Then you find someone like me...and I'll take them for a midnight stroll through the woods.

It would obviously behave like a NPC and none of your loot would be affected...
  • I would like that, except for the fact that it would harm the games servers because they have to have thousands of NPCs loaded at one time.

    Thats a neat feature.
But it´s hard to develop and not worth the effort imo.
And as winner909098 already said it increases server load as well.

Sounds like a very unnecessary strain on the server.
At this point you gotta ask yourself, why even do it instead of hosting more concurrent players on said server.

Having enough NPCs should remove the need for this.

I mean that's fair but if the game is supposed to be able to host up to 10k players at the same time and currently there are only 8k online players it would be cool if we could fill in 2k NPC players so the cities will feel more alive. And if 1k players suddenly joins in the server the number of NPC players would be reduced to compensate. The idea is to keep the illusion of a vibrant population at all times.

I'd be ok with my character not being in the game when I log out. I am also ok with not seeing any offline characters in the game. I don't see a need or a benefit to this, however, It is a really unique idea that is outside the box in terms of a lot of the suggestions we have seen.

Interesting concept but I would see implementing it being a challenge.

I assume that would be the case, but the idea alone that someone can just kill my character when I am not there does not sit right with me. I think IS did mention something about being able to have a store open and control it from your phone so that might be a thing.

What if there is no woods ?

Then they can stroll along a precarious cliff edge.
    Or through a hazardous swamp
Or perhaps a hike up a frozen mountain top?
Or a sweaty adventure in the warmer depths of the earth.

    Lots of "interactive" opportunities. :)

I really like this idea. It would make the world feel like a more permanent place, and it's not like the characters are players on the server when logged off. npc's should take up much less resources than a logged in player, just need to make the npc look like the character.
  • This is possible if you limit the amount of possible player-npcs.

imo what is a better idea, is that if it comes possible to have player owned shops (like at your house for example), your character will stand at the shop when offline.

My question would be how would this work for people who log out and never log back in? Will there be an endless hollow corpse forever roaming without purpose?

    solutions to concerns:

    - Players turning NPC are unkillable, or if killable - unlootable.
    - Players turning NPC can only happened when logged out in a town/city
    - Say Player logged off inside an INN, now he's NPC wandered to the BANK - when the player re-logs in, He relogs back in the INN. This was the last time the player was a PLAYER before turning into an NPC. Hence point 1 - NPC are unkillable and/or unlootable. Since the actual Player data was logged off in the INN, not at the BANK.
    - There is a HARD LIMIT of how many players can be turned into an NPC per server. That is up for Intrepid to decide.

Love this concept! Great idea, and certainly would assist in seeing a node develop, who is in it, and having an identity on, not just a server, but a node/country/city-state for the server!

Ive been suggesting that you become a NPC guard for your node when you logg out.
Wasent there an Asian game where you did that? Age of Wushu or something.
