Don't be too perfectionist Dev´s!

PatsoldPatsold Member, Alpha Two
all the delays give me the feeling that the dev's want to be "too perfectionist".
It seems to me that you don't want to mess with your players. We as a community have many suggestions and different opinions, but you have to know that you can't please everyone. Stick to the deadlines. Show your mistakes too. We're not losing the hype about the game. Do not be afraid. I see us as a community as a help. We don't play the game, we can't prescribe anything about which we only have dangerous half-knowledge. I just wanted to have said that :)

Given the amount of grief they get from people saying:

"OMG looks at da graffiks i cant beleeve da graffiks r so bad this game is gunna fail lyk 4eva an OMG lyk 4 real"

whenever they bring out a video and say:
"This is still a work in progress, but just enjoy where we are right now",

I can fully understand why they'd feel the need to push back some testing to ensure a more "perfectionist" display.

The problem is the community, not the studio.

Maybe you won't lose hype, I know I wont either, but I feel there is a lot of people that would be concerned with the game if we get a non NDA Alpha release with monsters getting stuck in terrain, players clipping trough the floor and falling to the void or maybe having crap framerate...hell, people is already complaining about the combat even tho it will be reworked.

Intrepid Studios can only give a first impression once and they know once they have non NDA access. it will be seen by A LOT of people so they need to make sure what they show is solid enough

The delay gives me the feeling that they don't want footage of bugs to dominate the image of the game.

I am pro-NDA. NDA until Beta 2 would be good.

Same here. I prefer to keep the NDA but show little snippets/sneak peeks inside what's going on like they've been doing but more on a biweekly scale. Every month we have a live stream; that's good, but how about every two weeks we see different game mechanics or naval travel other animals/creatures with the monthly live streams. That'll keep the community happy.

The more time they spend doing videos for us, the less they spend working on the game. I'm fine with once a month.

I get it a lot at work. I'm trying to sort out their problems, and they keep demanding a phonecall about it. And, while I'm on the phonecall, I can't fix the problem. If they left me to it, it'd get done a lot quicker.

I have been pretty happy with the pace of "Sneak peaks" and the monthly updates. I mean I am watching a handful of games progress. Some slower than others. Ashes seems to be on a fair pace.

If anything I would like to see more stills of armor and gear than actual footage.
I like seeing the concept art vs the real thing.

    Understand your intentions, but no.

Yes some people are understanding of how game development works, but a big chunk will judge the game on its first look.

I just don't want the dev's to turn in a circle. With comments like: "this is my last MMO that I will try because I get disappointed too often". That brings pressure. And if you get too careful, you scare your fans away. that's how I think about it.

They already have that pressure, because they have an ambitious goal they want to complete and told their community their goal, which gives the community expectations for said goal. The pressure's already there, and they have put that pressure on themselves, which is absolutely awesome! Because they know what they and the community wants, and are trying to live up to their expectations. They wont just fall back from that, the goal has already been set.

As I stated in another post, this will not be the last delay.

Image is everything. They do have a small advantage in that many players are bored with what currently exists, but that is a small advantage. They know this game has to be fairly flawless when the NDA lifts. It does not have to be perfect but it has to be able to show an extensive amount of progress to keep players looking for more. Many bugs will still exist but as long as they are not overly annoying, the community will understand.

I also want to see how the game is going. I was looking forward to the plethora of streams to watch this coming up weekend. I wanted to see the game from a consumer point of view.

Honestly I would just prepare for Alpha 1 to start around July-August. The NDA might lift a few weeks prior to that. I think they have more to work out than they want players to know.

I think they are starting to come into the inflection point over the next 3-4 months where they will need to make the tough decisions of what goes into the "Minimum Viable Product" at launch vs what can be added later on as enhancements/new features. Every major software product goes through this. The key is that what they do decide to ship in V1 is high quality (but not perfect), fun, and aligns with the long term game vision. Too many game companies cut on the quality and ship early to meet a deadline. I'm okay with some delays like this if it means a better product at launch. If the delays pile up too far though, that's an indicate that the v1 scope is too big (which is a real risk with how ambitious this project is).

As a community we can probably help when we provide feedback by also sharing how important our recommendations are (i.e. ask yourself if you would delay the release a month for feature X or if the feature could come after release. Is the feature a true deal breaker for you to play the game?)

From an Agile point of view there is a fine line between delivering a Minimal Viable Product and delivery a tool that the users do not see value in. I respect the Product Owners / Deployment Specialist point of view on this. There is most definitely a lot on the backend we are unaware of.
