Soundtrack Music Direction

Whilst music will be one of the last things to the be added into the game, there is no denying that music elevates any game.

Here are a few questions that might make for a good discussion:

- What kind of direction would you like AoC's in game music taking?
- Would you have it be just music, or vocals too?
- Would you have music in a same area change with day and night cycles?
- Would you have it change with the seasons?
- Would music change in settlements depending on the Node's development?
- Would the music in town change depending on what the primary racial aesthetic is?

Feel free to share only one or two pieces of MMOs soundtrack that you enjoy and would like to see something similar to it. (I say only one or two, because more juste makes your post seem too long)

  • But do you have a preference as to what kind of music? Would it be vaguely medieval stuff or something more specific to certain types of cultures? (think the Witcher games soundtracks)

What types of real world cultural influences could we see each race have in their music?

What of open world music? Dungeons and raids?

    - What kind of direction would you like AoC's in game music taking?
Epic orchestral music, like Elder Scrolls
    - Would you have it be just music, or vocals too?
I wouldn't particularly mind vocals, as long as they're not too intrusive. I quite liked how ESO had bards singing as you went around a city
    - Would you have music in a same area change with day and night cycles?
    Yeah, that sounds pretty cool
    - Would you have it change with the seasons?
This also would be pretty good, and would give a different feel to each week you logged in
    - Would music change in settlements depending on the Node's development?
Yeah, the higher the node level, the grander the music
    - Would the music in town change depending on what the primary racial aesthetic is?
Yes, this would be a nice addition

  • Have you ever tried to change a composer's mind on what they are writing? Have fun.
He has (we hope) been working on it for some time.

    - What kind of direction would you like AoC's in game music taking?
Not sure how to explain, it depends on the atmosphere.

    - Would you have it be just music, or vocals too?
Personally i LOVE vocals as long as they aren't overbearing, in mmo's specifically the angelic kind. I believe it can elevate certain emotions when seeing something for the first time. Like, you enter a new biome for the first time and theres epic vocals with violin/orchestra music playing, that'd make the experience of just seeing this new area double as epic.

    - Would you have music in a same area change with day and night cycles?
Don't think it matters too much, although it being dark gives off a completely different vibe so the music has to fit both darker and lighter lighting.

    - Would you have it change with the seasons?
No, but sound effects i would.

    - Would music change in settlements depending on the Node's development?
Yes! For sure. If a node develops in a specific direction, the regular music might not fit the theme.

    - Would the music in town change depending on what the primary racial aesthetic is?
Yes 100%. Would love to hear battleshouts and drums for example in a orc aesthetic and those angelic vocals with violin/orchestra as explained earlier in an elven aesthetic.

    - What kind of direction would you like AoC's in game music taking?
I would find a composer who loves epic symphonic music, maybe with a dark or metal flavor. Someone who understands what all of the instruments in a orchestra are good for and how to use them.
    - Would you have it be just music, or vocals too?
Only on raid bosses, and only in Latin.
    - Would you have music in a same area change with day and night cycles?
If the composer thinks it is interesting to do so.
    - Would you have it change with the seasons?
Again, If the composer is into it. Would be cool.
    - Would music change in settlements depending on the Node's development?
Not against it, but it would never be a priority.
    - Would the music in town change depending on what the primary racial aesthetic is?
For sure every race should have a theme. At least maybe instruments that they use to play variations on the main themes.

I know its not a MMO theme, but god would it work.

  • - What kind of direction would you like AoC's in game music taking?
I am always a fan of folk music, it goes well with high fantasy settings.
    - Would you have it be just music, or vocals too?
Light vocal would be nice but without overdoing it. I think vocal should be more utilized for bossfights rather than ambience to elevate the epicness of the encounter.
    - Would you have music in a same area change with day and night cycles?
It would be a nice touch but I doubt it is necessary.
    - Would you have it change with the seasons?
rather than being bound to seasons I would have theme be bound with node type, biting cold of mountain winds regardless of the seasons type rather than having 4 different remixes of the same theme.
    - Would music change in settlements depending on the Node's development?
Yes, I think it would be more immersive to have different music playing in a village than a metropolis to give an example.
    - Would the music in town change depending on what the primary racial aesthetic is?
It would keep the town more immersive but I imagine generic town music would work most of the time.

I would call Bill Brown (composer for Lineage 2) and ask him - Hey Bill! Can you make me music like you did in L2? I would literally donate a kidney to listen to this guy's work again as I was for last 15 years. Arguably the best fantasy score ever made for a game.
