Voice chat in survival games and MMO’s has always brought the community closer together and created a more interactive experience. I understand the Ashes devs wanting to protect the players from themselves so that there isn't any voice abuse and easier moderation logging, but still want to put voice into taverns.
I feel like putting voice chat into taverns is a good start but it should be everywhere. Being able to speak to anyone anywhere would make the game that much more immersive.
Imagine coming over as a party to an abandoned pirate cove and instead of typing “hello!” in the chat, you get to actually /wave and greet them however you want. You can relay information between your two parties much faster and way more in depth, and everyone can put their own spin on it with accents, role-play, basically anything that comes to mind. I understand that cities and towns will get loud but thats the point! Entering a bustling city with strangers and friends talking on every corner.
Now I understand that voice chat can also very easily break an RP element of fantasy and so on, but I think that is all up to the community. I think if together with the devs we harbor a fairly non-trolling atmosphere, which it seems it’s already doing, then voice chat would breathe life into the game as much as any other of the systems would.
Let me know what you think, what has been your experience with voice chat and do you think we should have a more universal voice chat in Ashes of Creation.

This is my personal feedback, shared to help the game thrive in its niche.
It doesn't get friendly and welcoming because 1, the game creates a toxic community, and 2, just because someone isn't welcoming, or friendly, doesn't make the game worse. Sometimes people will be friends and other times they will be enemies, it would be fun to see both scenarios in-game with open-world voice chat.
Wouldn't it be more interesting for you to lob that amount of sarcasm over voice chat instead of text?

Thanks ^^
I think keeping it to taverns, party, raid, guild, etc was a wise choice. This game has encouraged competitive gameplay and very focused on PvP. You would hear more rage screeching than friendly interaction which could make or break someone's enjoyment of the game.
Then you could have the option of turning world voice chat off.

If it is anything like Rust (which it may be if VOIP makes it into the game), then it would be more like 20 negative to 1 positive lol.
Voice chat in AoC should definitely NOT happen.
This is not a solution in any way. I want to base my critical thinking decisions based on the actions of others in an MMO, not based on if they are screaming racists comments, yelling REEEEEEEEEEEE, or playing high frequency sounds to destroy the ear drums. Having VOIP in a game and leaving it off is just not smart. We would HAVE to have it on in the off chance that people are using it to communicate so we would hear them prior to seeing them. I don't like this.
Keeping it out of the game prevents a lot of issues and very minimal benefits. Just join a discord and keep everything organized.
Ironically enough this helped me earlier today. I came into a occupied port to drop off a few crates for a cargo run. My cremated accidentally shot and I said quickly in voice "don't shoot"... the other team didn't engage us and we went on our way (they were a bigger crew and I didn't want to stir up some fighting when I had the cargo to unload ).
Still though, I wouldn't advocate for it in a MMO... for this one good experience I can think of multipe annoying experiences. Usually people joining my group with an open mic playing something super loud in the background.
This a thousand times. In game VOIP is almost always bad.
If they do waste time doing it I will bet 90% of the players will turn it off or never turn it on to begin with.
Still and on / off and mute player x option though
love this idea. I think it would promote the tavern keeper fantasy of having regulars that you exchange a few words with on their travels.
YES!
Thats a very interesting idea
