Just watched the video and you are 100% right. Like you I have been on both sides of the equation out playing and being out played vs larger groups. being aware of what is going on and paying attention is huge advantage. Using the terrain and mobs to your advantage helps a lot. Back in WoTLK leveling a priest in Hinterlands I had a rivalry the an ally warlock. We had some great battles back and forth. He jumped me on the stairs of what used to be the group area with all the Trolls(been a long time since last there). I mind controlled him and Dotted several groups then ran out of the area to let him die alone to many packs of angry trolls.
Paying attention and working properly as a group you can over come much larger groups. In the anti-alliance thread there are some good videos of this happening.
