Can mounts die?

Member, Alpha One, Alpha Two, Early Alpha Two
in april's updates it was mentioned that mount will have a separate health bar then the owner and that they will persist after the owner hops off the mount. so my question is that if the mount dies is that permanent or does the mount go on cooldown and you cant use it for like set time? or is it you can just recall it after battle or something of the sort?
