What are your favored attributes in a naval ship?

After todays tweet. I thought I would take the discussion to the forums.

As someone who as spent years as a US Navy sailor. I love boats. Even though I server on a metal ship with no sails. I have a special place in my heart for ships from the age of sail. They are very much romanticized in the modern navy. Navel history is nearly a daily topic for those out at sea. I would also imagine this extends to anyone on any non-navy ship at sea too. If not maybe I am just a magnet for this type of conversation. I did take the time to look at all of the cosmetic ship skins we have to far.

https://ashesofcreation.wiki/Ship_skins

Too me personally they all look fantastic. This is one area of the cosmetic shop where I have not seen a skin a don't like. Not all of them have the best sails and rigging, but in fantasy I let it slide. Many people who understand armor will extend disbelief a little to allow themselves to also love fantasy armors in this way.

To answer the twitter question:
I want to see a octopus or squid themed ship. Maybe something with like tentacles holding up the masts or something crazy. Would be nuts to see a living giant squid that is tied up with rigging on it. A living breathing ship that is eternally angry about its current situation. I have seen a lot of pictures of giant squids/octopi fighting ships, but never of one being a ship. Seems like a no brainer to me.

What do y'all wanna see?

I would like to see the bona-fide animation of the folding boat from dnd. A ship that you can change the size of with a single command word. If it was designed for fishing It would be perfect. Think about it, you could take it up rivers in its small mode and out on large lakes/ the oceans with the larger size.

    here is the description.

    Folding Boat
    4 lb.
This object appears as a wooden box that measures 12 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. It weighs 4 pounds and floats. It can be opened to store items inside. This item also has three command words, each requiring you to use an action to speak it.

One command word causes the box to unfold into a boat 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 2 feet deep. The boat has one pair of oars, an anchor, a mast, and a lateen sail. The boat can hold up to four Medium creatures comfortably.

The second command word causes the box to unfold into a ship 24 feet long, 8 feet wide; and 6 feet deep. The ship has a deck, rowing seats, five sets of oars, a steering oar, an anchor, a deck cabin, and a mast with a square sail. The ship can hold fifteen Medium creatures comfortably.

When the box becomes a vessel, its weight becomes that of a normal vessel its size, and anything that was stored in the box remains in the boat.

The third command word causes the folding boat to fold back into a box, provided that no creatures are aboard. Any objects in the vessel that can't fit inside the box remain outside the box as it folds. Any objects in the vessel that can fit inside the box do so.

    @Sathrago

I always forget about the folding boat. No DM has ever let me have it. Every DM I have ever had seemed to make it so the gods were all working together to keep me off the sea.

That said I would love to see something like that assuming its not in the cash shop. Could be pay to win to have a boat that versatile. Maybe as raid loot from a epic naval raid boss.

    Space.

I have always wanted the experience of boarding a vessel with hooks, guns and blades during a storm.
I used to read a lot of Wilbur Smith when I was a kid and I love Pirates of the Caribbean saga, this scene in particular.
I like pvp and two moving vessel seems to me like an exciting and chaotic platform for combat and maneuvering.

    Why did Dreoh's ship sink?

Well his boat was hardly buoyant in the first place. It couldn't even carry a tune, let alone a person.

6 months fishing with a little dingy in BDO, then seeing a port full of galleons one day, it gave a moment of awe!

I like a good size difference between vessels but also I believe the larger the vessel, the harder it should be to obtain.

Sea of Thieves showed what dynamic water could be and lifted the experience fighting at sea could be.

    So attributes, the basics
    • Different speeds
    • Different weapon load outs (power / speed / range)
    • Different armament (speedy manoeuvrable glass cannons to clunky slow behemoths)
    • Different vulnerabilities
    • Variable water to deck boarding setup
    • Customisation from sails, to accessories / ornaments

I would like to see a magically enhanced boat - with crystal powered jet engines.
A glowing emerald zipping across the black ocean at night, tailed by a dozen or so greedy pirates >:D

I think I recall Margret saying something about how cool a glass bottom would be in a recent live stream. It seems possible.

I don't know if "Magitek" is a thing in Verra. I have not seen a anything like it yet. That said, FFVI and Ebberon are two of my favorite game worlds because Magitek/magipunk are so cool.

Ah, I guess it makes sense if we're just returning to Verra - nobody knows magic well enough to build magitek.
    maybe a future expansion? :o

As someone who is usually the passenger I like having seats to sit on, whether that's just the various levels and hanging your feet over, or actual benches. But I like feeling like I'm some fancy richling being chauffeured around the world.
It's dumb I know, but it makes for nice screenshots.

Radar like AA. Ability to change locations of armaments' only in specific areas like a harbor. A life boat for all us reef finders!! Image ability for sails and such. Last but not least... in the future... A floating city or a berthing area that a large group of boats could attach to... giving the potential for a lively, floating, social aspect to seadogs and their dislike of solid ground!!

My only real experience with boats is Sea of Thieves :p

I loved the largest boat because of how much space there was inside of it. Being able to screw around with my friends below deck while we're en route was super comfy

I would love multi-manned ships, though I'm not really expecting it to happen

It's always a little disappointing when you can have multiple people ride a ship, but only one player does the steering/sail-length/sail-direction/cannon-firing/etc. all by themselves and everyone else is along for the ride. Or when everyone can only ride their own ship.

I really would just like variety, where choices matter, like how many people can you have on them, to much weight will slow you down, different types of sails for speed, handling and weight. Do I bring the huge cannons that reload slow at longer range or take the quicker shorter, less damage. Lot's of choices I'm hoping

As someone who has spent an unreasonable amount of time playing Pulsar, Artimis and Empty Epsilon. I have to agree with you here. Unless the game is designed from the ground up to be a multicrew ship game. Most games with ships end up being underwhelming when it comes to how multicrew functionality plays out. That said, I would at least hope that steering and each cannon has to be manned individually.

Personally I could see having your melee steer and use cannons while your mages, healers, and archers do thing thing when you come close to another ship. Could also maybe have ship builders repairing the ship or something? Even if it was just that, I think it would still be a lot of fun. This is how Darkfall was, and it's ship PvP was some of the best times of my life.

This is what really excited me about the game "Atlas". Sadly the game did not feel like that in practice. It only takes seeing so many people put a stack of glitched out front facing cannons on the front of their sailing ship before you realize that realistic naval strategies from the age of sail are meaningless.

The weight limits and sail choices where all there, but they did not feel balanced when I played. Lots of people making suicide boats with big cannons. A real let down.

I really hope ashes can do better.
