Half-Breed Discussion: Half-Breeds Wouldn't Fit the Lore, Right?

Directly from the Wiki:

If the Verran races were combined they’d be the ancients. – Steven Sharif

In-and-of itself, this means that inter-species offspring are not viable for the lore of AoC, correct? You couldn't have the blood of the 4 primary races mixed to such a degree as to allow possible emersion of a newly-born member of the Ancients' race.

....Right?

Yours truly was trying to flesh-out something for a to-be toon's start-game RP background and this occurred to me.

    You could RP it.
How many characters would believe you? You would have to try it and see.

Of course it's a thing they are called Tulnar Masters of Verra. Our blood didn't get diluted on Sanctus.

    Welcome to the fold Ty.
Most people never listen. They are just waiting on you to quit making noise so they can.

haha. I've never seen this and it actually made me laugh!

@bloodprophet I think the actual lore describes the Tulnar as the worlds filth living below the dirt. Breeding and inbreeding with anything they can find (pigs, lizards, rocks) just to survive and continue their miniscule existence. One day soon Tulnar blood will be spilled and nary a tear will be shed.

    Is that not just tulnar?

In addition to the tulnar, i'm pretty sure half breeds were mentioned during one of the extra life charity events

Was that for the lore or game play?

I think half breeds is perfect for the game lore, maybe a lot harder to implement on a game level though. Because just look at animal husbandry, they mix all sorts of crap together to make new mounts as one of its features.

For this sort of system though it might be proper to draw a line between the tulnar and the other races for this hybrid making since they have been removed from each other for so very long. A half-orc Half-elf sounds pretty sweet, it makes me think of the cannibal elves from divinity original sin 2.

Imagine a MMO made by that studio, would be very interesting

I think the closest we can get to that atm is baldur's gate 3. Imagine if you could take a single character and port it into other games for player made and company made dungeons to crawl.

Possibly, They attempted this, though poorly, with DOS2. Check this out.

Blech - I'm not going into THAT fold! The Tulnar sound like offspring of people who possess the ethics of the Dutch sailors of old: If it moves, then f*ck it! Their lore is interesting, but I don't need a part-skunk, part-bear grandson....

Right! Then you marry a Dork and an Elfman, to create the race that was the Ancients' species. It was the Corruption then turned them into the creepy, half-tree, half-titan-lookin' things we've seen so far.

Abomination is often a *great* way to advance research and forbidden knowledge!

Aye - it doesn't feel like we'd get it as a play-able race; If anything, I suspect we'd only get half-breed NPCs.

It'd be interesting if something akin to this came up as part of the Storyline, though....

Maybe the new Verran magicians and the scientists from Sanctus pool their know-how and resources in an effort to re-create the Ancients' original, non-Corrupted race, in order to better study their strengths and weaknesses?

    in the book you go
  • A lot of the half breeds are also the origin of some of the races. That said games don't usually include them because of the dark pasts associated with some combinations and for ease of access so the game doesn't have 200 very specific races.

RP is the only realistic option in this case. I would not be opposed to more race selections later down the road, but I'd prefer unique pure races over mixing a bunch of pre existing ones.

I've seen a few people on Discord who are already planning on RPing half-breed characters. Also on the wiki it says (long ago) there were Toren which were half-elf and half-human so it's possible. https://ashesofcreation.wiki/Toren_empire

Possible, but I think the people of Sanctus tried to avoid recreating the Toren.
(Also, might not be possible without magic - that's what we have to check on.)

If the seven created the four races such that all four combined would essentially be an ancient, then would the act of cross breeding be considered a heresy?

Yours truly is hoping to see some kind of tie-in for this, in the Religious parts/quests of the game.

Wouldn't it make sense to research the race the Ancients were, before they Corrupted themselves? Maybe there's weaknesses we can exploit, in order to defend Verra against a second wave of Harbingers!
